Either way is good. Hereford cows would probably a little less expensive to buy maybe. Might not be as many of them at one time though. It may take a while to put together a large group of red cows, in some places.
I would say this though if buying commercial black cows some could be red carriers and a Hereford bull would throw some red calves in that situation.
Most registered American Angus do not have red carriers so with Angus bull over red cows your pretty well likely to get all BWF calves.
That said they ain’t nothin wrong with Hereford Red Angus crosses either.
 
There is a man up on the other side of Baker who has 2,000 black and black whiteface cows. When they come down in the late summer there is 100 horned Hereford bulls in a field the other side of the freeway. There are a few red baldie calves. But when you have that many calves to sell. A few off colored one sure aren't going to change anything.

Yes that’s correct, about an Angus bull over Hereford cows, but what he is saying is that when a Hereford either a real one or a black hided version are bred to a Hereford or Hereford cross cow the resulting calves can have a whole lot of white, on them.

It is a bull thankfully They are worth more than heifers. I got over pretty or cute years ago. My favorite color is green. If it had been a heifer I would have certainly traded you for a black Angus calf of equal size and quality. But I think the freight would have been a killer for you.

Just curious what the longest distance you have ever shipped cattle is. I don't like anything over a hundred miles or so. From here to your area is 1600+ miles, way too far.

Two different times I sent a potload of bred heifers from Western Washington to eastern Nebraska. The new owner was paying the freight. I have been told it cost about 10 cents a pound to ship feeders from here to Nebraska. When I lived on the WA coast every year I shipped the calves 200 miles up over the Cascades to the Toppenish sale yard. The difference in price more than paid the freight.
 
I got a black whiteface calf out of a Hereford cow this morning. Back before I bought them (there was 2 Hereford cows) the vet told me these 2 would have black calves. I asked how he could tell the color with his arm up their rear. He replied that he knew the people who brought them in and that they have black bulls. Another Hereford who had a calf a couple days ago had what we call a red neck calf. The only white on it is the face. Most likely a red Angus cross.

I have a different one out there this morning. I have gone back and checked 3 times because it just isn't right. It is a Hereford cow and I mean a plenty of white Hereford cow with a pure black calf without a speck of white on it. Next time I go out there I will take the camera.

I’ve got a cow that looks like a purebred Hereford would. She has some Angus in her from being sired by a BWF bull. She has a calf with just a little white on its face.
It wouldn’t surprise me if she had a solid calf at some point. It’s just the way the genes line up.
Kind of the same way a BWF cow can have a solid colored calf or a white faced calf.
