I have a cow that my phone in vet says it looks like cancerous eye. She is healthy as a pig and has a 4 month calf on her that’s doing good. I have giving her 2 rounds of Bio-mycin, first thought it was pink eye and treated with bio mycin. It went from bloody red look to normal fleshy look after 3-4 weeks; Ad time progressed she started to show heavy white matter in eye and draining heavily clear liquid. I gave her another round and after 2-3 weeks it looked better but 3 weeks after that the white matter came back but not as bad. My question now is, can I give another shot of bio mycin? And next question is it ok to spray some Vetricide eye spray in it. I’ll try to get new pics when I do this but with my back surgery I’ll have to depend on my helpers to catch her. I can give shot and spray eye when caught in head gate. She is raising a 3 month old calf now and other than this looks healthy and strong. Thanks for advice here.

If its cancer eye, the only thing thats going to help is having a vet remove the nictating membrane (third eyelid), as long as its done early they can often be saved. Spraying it won’t cure anything. Wait too long and culling is the only answer.

You could give her another shot and spray her eye but if it hasn’t cleared up with two rounds you either need a stronger antibiotic or it’s cancer eye and an antibiotic isn’t going to help.
Just be careful with your slaughter with drawls.
If I can find a vet to do this do you have any rounded figures for cost of this procedure? Can they do it on my farm or do I have to take the cow in to vet? Just trying to get and idea as what I facing. Thanks

I don’t, sorry. I’ve seen it done, and it only takes a few minutes if its contained to the nictating membrane.
I had one with the early stages of cancer eye years ago. We took her in and the vet removed the 3rd eyelid in both eyes (the 2nd eye as a precaution). Again, this was probably 9 years ago, but the bill was less than $20. No meds, just cauterized the eyelid after the removal, which took all of 20 minutes max for both eyes. I kept that cow until she was 13 and stifled.

If it is cancer eye and you don't address it in time you wont be able to give the cow away. I hauled one in for someone else last summer. Zero bids and an old junk trader said if someone would give him $50 he would haul it off. I don't know whatever happened to it.

From what I'm seeing unless she's a special high dollar cow sell her now before as Dave says she is worthless.

Vet came, it’s cancer eye like we thought. He removed the third eye membrane from her and said it should clear up in a week. He also said it may never come back but in bou 3-4 months it may come back. It still after 4 days a little white mucus and draining. I do hope it clears up. She doesn’t act like it bothers her and she can still see out of it.
I think I posted the outcome of this but can’t find it. It is cancer eye, I did find me a Vet that’s only about 25 miles from me but he is very busy and hard to get. When you call it could be 5-7 days before he gets here. But he will come out. He removed that eye membrane in about 20 minutes from start to finish. He did check her for pregnancy and she was open. Total bill $210. He said it should clear up now in a week. Said it may come back and may not come back. He advise me to cull when her calf is weanable. That’s about a month now. I am so glad to find this vet. He has people working his office and he travels some but mostly Thursday and Friday he is on the road. I am so thankful because for 10 years I had tried but was unable to get a vet that’s would come out. My dog vet had cattle and use to go out to farms but had an accident and is over 78 years old now and is only part time in the office with his daughter who took over his business.

Glad it all worked out. I have always heard about vets removing it but never seen it done.
Vet said it should clear up in a week but today eve it still has some drainage and a little white matter in the front corner of eye.
