I'm giving the old girl a lick of paint. I just hope the dementia doesn't set in and I remember where everything goes. They are very simple machines really, just a big Mecano set. Everything could be easily fabricated. I should be right my memory is pretty good once I involve my hands. It is a good opportunity to attend to a few little things that keep getting put off like some hydraulic leaks, a crack in a weld where the seat bolts to the fuel tank causing a fuel leak, I just soft soldered that up with an old copper soldering iron, I'm not game to weld the tank. Got the fuel shut off valve on the tank working again, replacing all the battery terminals, adjusting all the control levers, and a full service.
I ordered some New Caterpillar Yellow but the realised I needed Old Cat Yellow so ordered some of that. Meanwhile the New Yellow arrived and being as impatient as I am I thought I'd try it out on the under surfaces and then I liked the way it went on and it matched what it had been previously repainted with so I have started with that and ordered another can. The Old Yellow when it comes I might use it on the blade, tree pusher and ripper.

That is very neat, love the project. I worked one summer when I was 14 at a sawmill and they had a D6 that looks a lot like that (maybe a little bigger) and that thing would sure push out some logging trails. Like Ouachita I may have to find me one to refurbish. Thanks for sharing.

It is my D4D, I think it is mid 1970's model has the 3304 engine naturally aspirated 4 cylinder. I think the D6 of the time had virtually the same engine except with an extra 2 cylinders tacked onto it so I guess 50% more power however this one has enough grunt for what I do around the place pushing a few tracks through and maintaining them and a bit of fenceline clearing.
Here is the video of it in action, I have posted this one before, it is a handy machine.

Hey Silver, you gave me some advice some time ago and When I take it around to my bull paddock in the next few weeks to do some work up on my hill I will take it to my workshop there and fabricate some frontal protection screens and a rear one. I have had a sheet of heavy duty mesh sitting there for sometime trying to get my head around how I was going effectively utilise it but sitting in the seat yesterday I think I've finally got it worked out how I can get some extra protection from trees coming through without stopping me from getting in and out of it, I'll put up some photos when I'm finished.
I think from memory your D6 is sporting a pretty recent paint job anyhow. Seeing photos of it is what got me thinking I should smarten up my old girl a bit.

That looks like a fun way to fell a dead tree. I don’t have a dozer so I use this method.
