Do they have an appointment with the butcher or can you be flexible on the date? Here there are a few that are getting more open slots since the price of fat cattle is so high.

We're at least 90 days from that. But I'll do some calling next week. I've got one custom cutting place that is pretty flexible for sure. It's not usda but they do a pretty darn good job and they've FINALLY invested in vacuum seal equipment too. Used to be paper was all ya got.



I should've gave a little info huh? Was still working on my coffee when I put pics up. 🙃

The big steer is a friend's calf. He's over 1000lbs. Bottle raised. I told em, he's liable to be 13-1400lbs by the time he's fed! 😆

Our bwf steer should be about right for my tastes/freezer. He's over 600lbs now. Not been weighed.

I put mine in a local feedlot and they are definitely finished when they come out. Seems to take 5 months on feed even when they start at 1000 lbs going in. I like them in the 1500-1600 lb range on a medium frame steer.

Right on. We will be a little over 4 months on full feed. I thought the brockle face steer was a little light to start with myself. He's mine.

The black steer is not mine but iirc he weighed around 1100 when he started. I hate to split em up as I'm afraid mine won't eat as well by himself for a month. However, I have a heifer I could throw in with him that needs some growing.

It sure wouldn't hurt my feelings to fatten him another month too.

They have about 8 acres to free roam and graze. They've only eaten about half a round bale in these 4 months too.
 
Good points have been raised. Next ones we feed, I think I'll cut the pasture size down. Be easy enough to run a hotwire and reduce it to about 3 acres or less rather easily. I think less walking will do them good! 😆

The butcher date is very flexible here right now. We actually were able to move it up a week. They'll go this coming Wednesday. We are almost out of feed. May have to feed em some bagged feed for 2 or 3 days depending how fast they finish what's in the feeder.

I've read a bit on inter-muscular vs intra-muscular fat. From what I can understand, the marbling is actually developing after a good layer of fat is laid down. There comes a point tho, where the values diminish. Kinda like they've reached their peak and then the fat layer just keeps building. Anyway....

Yeah. The place I used to use only hung em about 14 to 18 days. Shorter usually.
I've heard 21 is better. We will see.

I've had issues with gas after eating my beef from the last place. Not terrible. Just noticeable. I think they needed to hang longer.
