I have a cow that I bought in January was supposed to calve in March/April, but calved a few days after I bought her. The same vet that preg test my cows does the sale barn.
 
When a cow gets in the 6+ stage, it is hard to call how far along they are bred... whether it is palpation or ultrasound... The calf is big and it all gets way over the pelvic region and calf sizes differ when the same "time frame"...one of our best vets that used to palpate and was real real good... said over 6 months... it's a crap shoot and the best is they are over 6 months... many you will be accurate on, but there are some that you just will miss...
Preg is good for me.... for our own, I know when the bull went in... for boughts... a live calf is good.... whenever it gets here...
 
I went out and looked for the calf. When I saw it this morning I was going to feed. Been a cool drippy day. From a distance I saw that the cow was hanging out not far from where I saw them this morning. Found it about 100 feet from where I saw it this morning. It looked good but I never went and made it get up. Big black calf and she looks to have lots of milk. She is hanging out 75/80 feet from the calf. One thing about these old one and done cows. They know how to raise a calf. If they didn't they would have gone to McDonalds years ago.
 
I think some of it can be the low birth weight bulls making it difficult to call. if your expecting "normal" sized calves. Years ago I bought some that palpated 6 Months. A month later all of them had calved. Calves weighed 50 to 60 lbs. Guy raised smaller framed cattle and used low birthweight bulls but the calves hit the ground live and grew fast.

After reading the thread I thought I'd throw this out there... My wife was pregnant and the midwife thought the baby was presenting feet first so she suggested we go to a doctor that specialized in breach births. The doc says the baby is head down, "But I have an ultra-sound machine in the back room, so let's make sure."
The doc checks and sure enough, the baby is in the breach position... but he says our dates are wrong, that the baby is "too small for days" to be full term. We knew our dates... and the wife goes into labor that same afternoon and delivers a healthy, full term, but small baby.
These people have plenty of training but only on "normal" circumstances. On anything unusual they are as in the dark as the rest of us.

Not 5 months short or even 2.
 
It seems that when they check they are very good at yes or no. As far as stage it is an educated guess. The farther along the harder it gets to put an age on the fetus.
 
The weather is nicer this morning. The cow brought the calf to the feed row. I was wrong. It isn't a black calf. I guess yesterday it was a wet brown calf. Today it is a dry brown calf with some white on its belly. And it is a bull. Buying bred cows is like what Forest Gump's mother said about a box of chocolates.
 
mrs Gump was correct about lot of things,
so is "calling the stage of late pregnancy" without all the facts, ie sale barn preg checks.

More mysteries and strange things about this cow. The cow still has the sale tag on her back so I looked her up. This cow was bought for me by a friend who is an order buyer. She is real gentle and has a lot of udder. When we branded her B called her a milk cow. I looked up her brand from the former owner. That brand is registered to a man in Albany Oregon. That is over in the Willamette Valley between Salem and Eugene. The cow was bought at the sale in Vale OR about 15 miles from the Idaho line. Got to be 350 miles between the 2. Purchased Nov 12 and called 7 months bred. Calved 24 days later. Here you very very rarely see cows bred to calf in December. Not like some parts of the world where calves are born year around. The vast majority are February through May with a few later into June. Fall calves are rare and nobody wants winter calves. But I have a healthy December calf. We will see what the cow looks like come spring.

350 miles is a long way to transport a cow. Has the local sale barn closed where it came from?

It would be interesting if you could find out how many cows from that area were sold at that sale. Could it be as simple as someone moving a load of cows out of there area looking for a better price?

I was thinking maybe a trader. Buying over in the valley and hauling over here. I know a couple traders who sell there at times but they are from Idaho not the Willamette. But it is a good little hike and up over the Cascades this time of year.
 
You mentioned B called her a milk cow. My thought that someone from closer to your area bought her from Craigslist or Facebook for a milk cow and had her hauled to them. When it didn't work out they sold her.
My next door neighbors moved here from Florida, traveled 6 hours this past summer and gave 5 times what some crossed up miniture Highlands were worth. They probably won't sell them but are disappointed that they can't pet them. If they gave them to me I would be ashamed to haul them to the stockyard.
 
B called her a milk cow because of her udder. She is mostly black Angus with a bigger udder. She isn't wild but I certainly wouldn't want to try to milk her. Cows at the sales in Eugene or Lebanon in general sell cheaper there than they do over here. Someone probably put together a load of cows and/or calves and hauled them over the hill. I have a friend who use to do that every week buying a trailer load at Chehalis and taking them to Toppenish the next week.
