Neighbors hay was ready to bale when we got 1.25 inches night before last. Ive got about 100 acres ready for 2nd cut but its just too hot for me this week. Plus these unexpected pop up deluges ever 2 or 3 days make it tricky.

Ought to be a heavy 2nd cut here this year. Last few weren't all that great IIRC.

That was the issue here. No rain the end of April, May, and first 3 weeks of June so there was hardly any grass. Then it started raining and hasn't stopped yet. Plenty of grass now but hard to harvest with standing water and continuing rains.
 
We have not had any rain to speak of since May. I thought for sure I would make it rain mid July when I cut my hay. All the hills around are brown like fall. My issue is getting the two fields that I cut watered again. The state had cut back the amount of water the ditch company can have, and therefore they have cut us back. I'm just barely getting enough water to run one 10" pipe, when I should be able to run two easily. I should be able to switch water to the other field monday or tuesday. One thing we are getting is smoke from all the fires. This morning I can't see beaver rim to the south of me, and can just barely see the Wind River Mountains to the west.

The smoke here has been so thick that when the sun is out you can barely see it at times. A few of the sunny days the nights dew has never burned off. We've had air quality alerts 21 of the last 31 days.

You Canadians need to put your camp fires out.

When you going to sell that hobby farm and get a real place?.... :LOL:

I remember, back in the day, taking a week to do 100 acres. 1 cutter, double rake, 4x5 round baler and Texas heat. 1000 acres sounds exhausting, but the equipment is a lot better today.

I can remember cutting with a 6ft Ford cycle mower and with good luck cutting 8 acres a day. If we had good weather we might get it square baled, small squares, and in the barn in a week. No tedders so just had to wait until it dried.

Times have sure changed. I missed out on mowers, but remember them. I remember Dad mowing , raking and building loose stacks with a sweep on a converted 3 ton truck that was turned around so the drive wheels were to the front.
When I began we cut with a side pull 9’ sickle bar haybine and baled with a steel bar round baler. Switching to belt balers, center pivot discbines and v-rakes has been a game changer and allowed us to cover a lot more ground for sure. I can’t even imagine going in circles around my fields again.
