My mama cow seems to be losing her hair. It’s an extreme amount of shedding. It is warming up and she did have a calf fifteen days ago but I don’t know if that is normal or not. And our calf is running the pasture, not listening to anyone, especially her mom. I’d be losing my hair too if I had to chase after that rascal all day!

i don't have an answer/advice just a story. had a yearling longhorn/red brangus cross about 10 years ago. after her calf she lost all the white hair. she was white/red colored. thought would die barely got her to walk enough to get to a trailer. do not know now what the vet said she had. kept her and calf penned for six months. she managed to get bred (must have crawled under the fence) during that time. the white hair never grew back just rough looking scars.

she is still going, a new calf 10 days ago. looks just like her dam sans scars. i don't have pet cows, but she is one. comes to me anywhere for a cube. so.......... probably a temporary thing should be okay. good luck.

Probably photosensitization. Cow consumes a toxic plant, ultraviolent light (from the sun) reacts to the toxin, like a very extreme sunburn which severely damages the skin, affects the light (white) areas.

At the first sign, get them out of the light. Dark barn.
 
That’s scary as all get out! I’ll get some pictures. I don’t have a dark barn but I do have a stall. She’s all black in the body where I noticed the hair loss. She isn’t going bald, just a bunch of shedding. Do cows blow their winter coats like dogs do?

Photosensitization is a serious condition. Hair loss not so much. Very unlikely your cow has photosensitization. Cows shed in the spring. That's a good thing in the south. Your cow may have lice. Common in late winter. That can cause hair loss/thinning in patches. With lice, they will be scratching/rubbing on the fences. Treatment for lice is pour-on insecticides.

that is good advice from "old dumb guy." that may have been what my vet said. i kept cow in a corner of barn in shade. on the opposite of the pen i hung a 30x30 tarp. kept it up for the six months until fall arrived, then turned her back with others. never had plastic surgery on her hide, ha, but she has fared well otherwise.
 
My blacks shed the long winter hair and get a summer brindle going each year.

I have a pour-on for flies. Do I need to worry about applying it to a nursing mama? She was rubbing on the trees like crazy a month ago. I haven’t seen her do it since she had her calf two weeks ago. If they have lice, I’m going to have lice and that is just so nasty to me!
 
Where would two cows who have been alone for 6 months even get lice? This conversation is giving me the heebie-jeebies.

It's a common deal and minor. Get some pics and post them. Until then it's all just speculation and no reason for concern.

... but yes.. keep that in mind next time you are hugging all over them for selfies. 😄😉

It’s very thin on one side of her neck but the rest of her hair is different but not terrible. My other cows are fine. Can I use this insecticide with a nursing mom?

That just looks like lice to me. Many of my cows get lice in the spring and some will get pretty big bald spots. I suspect they initially pick them up by rubbing on the trees. Once they have lice they want to rub a lot and that spreads them around even more. It seems some animals are more susceptible than others. Ultra Saber or an Ivermectin pour-on will get them, and I use it on cows with little calves quite often. I haven't seen any warning on the bottle that says I shouldn't. Follow the directions on the label. It is applied down the back based on the cows weight.
 
Ok, no worry needed. Cattle lice do not infest people. One may crawl onto you and creep you out, but they are not like the little lice that live in people's hair. You don't need any pour-on for yourself.

You can read the label on the ultra saber or just apply 10 ml down the topline of the calf and 15 ml on the cows. I would put 20 ml on the cow. None on their face.
