Hello from Deep East Texas

United Ag & Turf - used to be Fish & Still…better known to many of us as "The John Deere Place"…lol
Got to be good friends with the Constable trying to serve papers on my old neighbor for Fish and Still.
He used to hide out at my barn trying to catch him.
Law and lawyers finally caught up with him, semis rolled in too pick up equipment.

United ag & turf usually has what I need in stock, although pricey. Got to be better than that bunch that bought out Hammer equipment. I absolutely refuse to deal with WC, all a-holes

I bought a skid steer from tham last summer and got good service, prior to that I had bought parts and an implement or 2. Last new tractor I bought along with a trail mower was at Shreveport Tractor, The old guys were still there then so service was good, I then bought a new Kubota round baler from them and the service from both them and the Kubota rep was not just bad but really bad. There's a new Kubota place in Shreveport but their service is super slow and there's always an excuse. I haven't had and issues with the skid steer or loader so I don't know how the service is in Nagcodoches. I've got an older John Deere that's fairly basic so I've had no troubles but the neighbors with newer ones were having a lot of electrical issues when I was ready to buy so I went with Kubota for a tractor and it's been pretty good

Here in Nacogdoches we have a pretty good service department…service manager & shop foreman are very knowledgeable…got some good mechanics, too…although we are currently short-handed with 2 open mechanic positions…can't speak for other stores…Lufkin and Crockett have had their fair share of issues lately…we've had a couple of pieces of equipment sent to us from their service departments over the last week or so.

And we have a yard guy that’s hard to beat…that would be me…lol…I may be a bit biased on that one

#17 was born sometime this morning…I suspect to ear tag #21 (first time momma)…didn't get a photo even though I had my phone with me both times when I went down there today…sigh

With the warmer weather and chance of rain moving in this coming week, I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see more new arrivals…it can't be any more than 5 more unless another cow has twins…pretty good birth rate so far (almost 75%)…would be nice to have 20 this year…several are looking like they are "in the family way"…only time will tell.

Fed off the tailgate today with the missus driving…the red cow that got her head stuck in the grapple last week was following close enough to literally, and I do mean LITERALLY, stick her head in the bag…wish I had gotten a shot of that…

you're at the one by the Expo center in Nagcodoches?

Here’s a couple of shots of 4 of the calves from this year…I let the cows into the rye grass behind house and these four decided to be nosy Rosie’s…they just had to come up fairly close to the gate to see what I was doing. I say I “let” them in but really they just wanted to get at that fresh green grass…they demolished four 5x6 round bales over the last few days so I put out four more. Also put out some cubes but about half seemed more interested in the grass when I opened the second gate so I just said “what the heck? Have at it, girls. Of course, I then had to turn around and close the first gate before going back down there to put out the hay…maybe I’m spoiling them(?)

I’m fairly certain I counted 18 this evening but with the light fading fast and me in a hurry, I could be wrong…guess I’ll find out tomorrow…may be yet another new arrival. So, doing the math, 18 cows have had calves, 1 was killed by a stray dog but ear tag #1 had twins…this means there is the possibility of 5 more to come. I know two of the new cows which were supposedly bred haven’t calved yet…the angus-beefmaster cross can’t be far away…she’s getting pretty big…the red angus may have another month or so…and at least a couple of my “originals” are getting pretty big…we’ll see what develops…hopefully, the red angus won’t stick her head in the grapple again.

Confirmed 18 little ones…here's a few pics from this afternoon. Again, forgive my deficiencies in photography. But it is very cool going down there and seeing all the little ones. The missus almost insists on going with me to feed now that the weather is nice.

The shop cleaning adventure continues…found a 24 volt Kobalt string trimmer that had never been used…shortly after that, found the battery and charger. Also found a brand new hotshot still in the package. And the biggest mystery thus far - a 40-50 pound bag of non-food grade flour…yes, flour…have no idea what that was doing in there - a little had been used but most was still there - what is it and what is it used for? Google results are all about raw flour but I have nothing about “non-food grade” flour.

So 3 days and twenty-two 42-gallon contractor trash bags into this and I am only 3/4 of the way down one wall…but I am determined to get that shop cleaned. It has been so tricky trying to get around in there it could be an Olympic event…damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead…

Big time wind this morning followed by about a 30 minute downpour…then clear beautiful day…then, about 30 minutes ago, major wind…power off but generator kicked right on…accuweather says 12 mph wind currently…gonna have to call BS on that…pardon my French…but this is more than 12 mph…I’ll eat my hat if it’s only 12 mph.

A friend up in Weatherford (up near I-20 a little ESE of Dallas) said the wind was hitting them a little before noon. Well, it’s here…no rain but some serious wind.

Early spring in east Texas…sigh

And once again, raining on my day off…sigh

I did get 4 more round bales out yesterday and got a good solid count. All cows and the bull are present and accounted for along with a total of 19 calves…so far. Guess I'll just chill this afternoon. Oil changed in Tacoma this morning and attended a memorial service for our preacher's mother. Now I'll probably go stir crazy waiting for the rain to let up…I'm no good at this sitting still thing…sigh again.

Got pretty cool again today…coupled with wind and misting rain, it's pretty chilly. Fed off the tailgate again today and let them into the ryegrass behind the house…probably lure them back out after work tomorrow…should be a good bit warmer (low 70’s in the forecast). They are still going through the hay at a good clip. Probably have to put out 4 more bales Thursday or Friday…and that's just fine by me…I've got plenty on hand and would like to see them all put on a bit more weight…some got a little thin over the winter…not thin enough to get freaked out over but thinner than I like to see them.

All that have calved so far have done so unassisted and all are being good mommas. According to my calculations, I could have a maximum of 4 more - that's if every single cow has a calf when it's all said and done…there should be at least 2 more…

Thunder and lightning…here we go again. Pea-sized hail for a few minutes.

Put out some cubes and hay before this little storm showed up. The black angus x beefmaster is getting close…wouldn't be a bit surprised to see her calve given this weather…I guess they will all wait for crappy weather to domino…the grapple girl is getting a little more "well rounded"…few more weeks for her…still at 19 calves as of sundown today.

The guy that helps me with worming and working calves is keeping someone else's cows on a neighbor's place (I mentioned the giant Hereford bull over there in a previous post). Those cows came to the fence while I was feeding…some nice looking baldies over there…wish I had my phone at the time…alas, no pics.
