70 degrees would be considered pretty warm for a lake around here in the summer. I spent a lot of time in my youth swimming in lakes no warmer than that. One of the complaints you here here is swimming in a shallow lake that is "bath water warm" by late summer.
 
So is my pool in late August unless I let the pump run a few hours longer but by the end of Sept, it's cooled off 'substantially'.

People swim in lake superior all summer long and surface temps range from 45° up to maybe 65° depending on the wind.

I had a coworker whose wife was from Tampa Bay. They were down there visiting her friends and relatives. He said it was 70 degrees. Now 70 degrees is a nice day to go for a swim in western Washington. So he goes for a swim in the bay. Locals are walking down the beach wearing coats saying look at the crazy guy out swimming in this weather. It is all what you are use to.
 
Is Monday the day to pull and ship calves? Or just pull and wean? When will you preg check?

We did a group of about 25 preg check the other week... 8 out of 8 heifers preg... 2 cows from the other group open... have the rest of the heifers and a few first calf heifers from the same bull , and a smaller group of 7 pairs from another pasture, getting moved to barn tomorrow, about 25 again; to get preg checked on Monday here...We don't have the facilities to move and hold more than 30-35 to do at a time... plus we are in the process of tearing down fencing and putting up new, next week... redoing some here that is not in good shape... broken posts and making some new subdivisions for rotational grazing... cost share stuff that DS said he could not justify turning down.... fencing out of the creek... previous owner did not do as much as he should have and did not put in the better posts and such... been probably 30 years since he did it and some of it is in poor shape.
 
Monday, wean and deliver most s/c and non replacement heifers to scale. Tuesday the Boss and the crew will process any calves retained while yours truly does some business in Town. Sale day is Wednesday for any cutbacks from loads and maybe buy more calves. Preg Test Thursday and Friday and process any new calves on Saturday. We can average 75 an hour to preg.
 
How many hands (helpers/staff) do you have to preg check? Do you do any vacc when they are in the chute? 75 an hour is very impressive. You also have the facilities to handle them.

We do an average of 25-30 in an hour... vacc cows and re tag ear tags if necessary. There are 2 of us... plus vet.... pushing cows into pen, up chute, catch, vacc, ear tag, write down numbers, with P # days or mo....or O, and sometimes sort when going out, into opens or breds... hard to get any help worth a d#@n to do it, so we do it a little slower with just us 2....I just cannot move as fast as I used to.... works out okay for us. Try to arrange for vet when he is doing other work in this area, saves 1/2 the travel cost....often he will have an hour or 2 when he can put us in if in this area...

3 full time employees, one neighbor, the BossLady and me. She keeps the book, I run the chute and call out numbers.

Son pushes them up the alley... 4-5 at a time, will fit single file.... I head catch, get vaccine in needles, write them down, give the shot to the preg ones... son comes up and puts in tags if needed, and will go sort off the opens if needed... It would go MUCH faster if we could get one more person to push them into alley to chute, so son could stay up front... Oh well... we get them done and that is what it is all about.
How many do you do in the 2 days? 1000?
 
The biggest slow down when we worked cows on Friday was the ear tag. About half of these cows came from the same place. I tag on the left ear. They had ear marked the left ear. And I swear they had cut half the ear off in some sort of creative design. There wasn't much ear to tag. What was left was pretty thick. And the edges were scared up enough to make them thick and difficult to get the tag on to the ear.
