Well, parts of South East Ohio have now reached the dreaded D4 level of drought (Athens and Megs counties at the moment) a much larger area is at the D3 level and an even larger area has been at the obligatory D2 level. Under the guidelines, counties adjoining affected counties may also be eligible.

I'm attaching these files as they provide basic explanations of the Drought Monitor and various disaster programs available to agricultural producers. Most of the programs are available through the FSA (Farm Service Agency), although there are two that are administered by the NRCS (Natural Resource Conservation Service). The NRCS and FSA work with and assist each other on several of the different programs.

I live at the blue "X". @chaded lives somewhere in the county with the blue "O". The red and dark red are close to defining where "most" of my field work is conducted, although I cover the entire state of Ohio when needed for various conservation projects. @chaded, go to the NRCS/FSA office and apply for LFP now. You qualify. IDK if you or anyone you know of has CRP ground, but that is now an option as well.

Just completed my information for NW GA- we hit D3 in my county last week.

However, I will say, rotating pastures has been the key to my farm.
And CRABGRASS LOVES THIS WEATHER!
Gonna broadcast/plant 40-80 acres of it next spring.

Innerseeding crabgrass into fescue works extremely well when done correctly and given the right conditions.... after the seeding. Part of the problem is that you have to do the work before you know if you are going to have the right conditions. But, the innerseeding works at least moderately well and can be justified in most cases.
 
It’s been raining steady the past couple days and rain is in the forecast up into next week. Fescue is bouncing back some.

I’m taking the calves off the moms and to the sale next week and then I am going to do what I can to get through the winter. I took my culls in a couple weeks ago and the ones I have left I absolutely do not want to get rid. After starting over and pushing this herd I finally got a good base to build off of.

Don't rush to graze it. The rain is great and the fact that the fescue is getting some color. Give the fescue some time to recover before grazing it. You will have more grass at the end of October if you do than if you hit it now, and next spring will look a whole lot better as well.

Yeah I’m used to stockpiling fescue and grazing in the winter. This year will be trickier because of having less hay to feed while letting grass grow. I think I will have just enough to get me through.

If I hadn’t kept the hay I did from the previous year I would be selling my cattle right now. The guy that makes my hay tried hard to buy mine and said “you won’t need all that.” I always try to carry some over from the previous year.

@chaded, you qualify. I can't tell you what you will get as that is for FSA to determine, but follow through with this. You are/should be eligible for a disaster payment from them.

You will/should in likely the form of a payment. Go to your FSA office and complete the paperwork. I got word a couple of hours ago that the FSA in the portion of the state I work in is currently drawing in additional FSA employees from elsewhere in the state to assist with the influx of producers completing disaster paperwork at local offices for processing. @chaded, you might have a line, as well as @M.Magis, and I know there are a couple more of you here locally.
 
Thanks Mark ! Son talked to them this week . They told him to give them a couple of weeks before coming to get our paperwork. Trying to get an exact count of our cows and calves . We have sold 31 over the last 2 weeks , so hope we can include those numbers also . I know in the past there’s a cutoff on claiming the one you sell .
 
My date given was total herd numbers on July 18th.
The level 3 you hit is probably same as me … our county touches TN/AL line.

Numbers over here were
1.6 for Carrying Capacity
Payment rate
$52.56/Beef Cow and Bulls
$39.42/Beef Non-Adult 500 pounds or more
Have to factor in conversion % and one other factor…

Then you have to use the conversion factor and whichever rate is less… for lack of a better word.

Of course you have different #s all over but that's where we were.

And then of course you get taxed on the dollar that's already been taxed :)

If you go into the FSA office, they’ll fill out and submit the paperwork for you. They’ve even called me before to let me know about programs I was eligible for to see if I wanted them to start paperwork for me. Though they haven’t called this year, but I don’t have any cattle right now anyways.
