Let them out of prison today. Just because it's easier for me when they're at the barn doesn't mean it's better for them. Seltzer and Tonic will randomly want a bottle but they both look good and dang Fizzy is now all about getting her share. Da hell? And she wasn't a bottle calf. But if there's any leftover, I'll dump it in a bowl, and she laps it up like a dog. Whatever as long as she's taking care of both twins, and they seem to be doing great. I'll keep warm bottles of water available with milk replacer in a baggy and mix 'em up if the calves want one.

Fingers crossed but hoping for the best.

I'd sell one in a heartbeat - except she really wants them both.

They've been having lots of problems with their website and had a temporary, alternate. Last update I saw on Facebook, the original website should be back up and running today or tomorrow.
 
Dang, I'm seriously reconsidering selling Fizzy at weaning. The teat I treated for mastitis has milk and sometimes it's noticeably smaller, but they just don't love it. Still giving Seltzer a bottle morning and night but she probably doesn't need it; Fizzy is doing an amazing job on essentially 3 quarters. Twins are generally together but when they are separated, she goes back and forth. To me, it's worth the extra work, time & money on replacer.IMG_20240613_181708794.jpg

Thanks! She's getting extra cubes to help her maintain condition. She's figured it out and keeps the twins with her on the fringe of the herd, waiting for me each morning when I take inventory. And yes, she gets to stay. As a general rule, mastitis is a cullable offense because I've never had one completely recover, even when I've taken them into the vet. She's the exception. Also an exception because she wanted and is raising both twins. Next year I'll bring her to the barn when she's getting close to calving, just to be safe. And preferably not twins again!
 
Actually, twins with her having had mastitis is a good thing. They will work harder to keep her "good" in all quarters. A single calf would tend to favor the "good tasting" quarters, and often will bypass a less preferred quarter... This way, they are both working on her equally....
One thing that old time farmers have done, is a dairy cow with mastitis, they will put a couple of very aggressive calves on the cow to really work over the udder... constant butting helps to break up and dislodge any "pockets" of less than desireable milk... and aggressive nursing constantly like that will clear up the mastitis and help stimulate the quarter, and udder overall, to produce more milk...

Weaning! Didn't wean the twins and my 2 other late calves with the others but decided to wean them earlier than I usually do and get it over with. Gotta give Fizzy some serious cred because they're pretty much the same size as the other two. Anyway, I'll keep them at the barn for now and eventually move them to the west 80 with the other weaners. I generally like to wean minimum 45 days, preferably 60, but may pick my battles and sell them early.
