    Alfalfa Blooms, done growing?

When alfalfa hits bloom stage, does growth stop for all pratical purpose? I understand that as % of bloom goes up, quality starts to drop. Asking as with no rain to speak if, second crop is hitting 10% but only 12" tall. If I wait to cut, and trade off quality, will I still pick up tonnage...

Round bales with old corn stalks

Last year field was in corn. This spring disked the corn stalk fodder in best I could, then "no-tilled" a mix of clover, alfalfa, and grass. With the lack of rain, just now got the first cutting off and baled. The question. When raking, I pulled in the last of the corn stalk residue, and it...

    Holstein feeder calves

Buy a copy of your local "farm" newspaper. I think you have Agri-View in IA? Look at the local sale barns and see who tracks higher. When you pick you place, call them and ask then how many head do they have going though the ring that day. Subtract 20% from that number. Find a place that...

    Banding

I read last year that you could have faster gains by leaving them intact to around 500lbs. I did that on two batches of holstein feeders. I did not see a difference in gain, just more work to be done later. Back to banding ASAP.

    mineral question

I have found that salt it the determing factor in mineral intake. To little salt they over eat, to much, the undereat. This is why I have my mineral mixed with the salt in the loose mineral I buy. Not saying good for all, but it works for me.

    Can't make money on cows

I agree with you all. My money is made in two areas, keeping calves alive, and keeping cost low. For example I have an old tractor, haybine, and rake. But when it comes to baling, I can not make enough bales to buy the tractor and round baler. I paid $400 for a good headgate, but made the...

Oats or Barley for nurse crop?

Around here it would be called balage, or just wrapped bales. In my mind balage is what you would have if they fermented. Here I am looking to wrap them to avoid rot/mold/etc. If one is not that much superior to the other, I will decide based on yield and cost. Thanks to you both.

Oats or Barley for nurse crop?

Seeding a new pasture/hay field this spring. Due to needed feed, I will be cutting and baling the nurse crop rather than letting it mature. I am guessing I will need to wrap these bales due to high moisture. I live in NW Wisconsin. Is barley or oats, cut permature, and baled the better...

Baled Corn Stalks, mineral, and what else?

Most all I have read suggests adding DDG. How should this be fed? On top of stalks in the bale ring or in a feed trough? Thanks for the help here all.

Baled Corn Stalks, mineral, and what else?

Do you think a protien lick tub would work as well as range cubes? I know I should be chopping the bales and adding DDG or Glutten, but do not have the chopper do the job right, so working on Plan B. Keep the help coming, I am thankful.

Is there any chance you have a link bookmarked? If not, no big deal, I can hunt for it. Thanks Edited to add, If you can lead me in the right direction, I would be grateful as I cant find it on their vast website.

Baled Corn Stalks, mineral, and what else?

I will be changing from baled hay to baled corn stalks this coming week. While I know they will be less than thrilled about the change, do I need to be feeding anything else to suppletment the bales? If so, what would be recommended? I am OK with them losing one body score point before late...
