    Hereford coming yearling bulls

Wow, I didn't know this thread had taken off. They are just some bull calves bought at the auction, they belonged to some folks who have herefords, they are not registered or seedstock people, we have virtually none around here and only one hereford breeder in all of s.e. Colorado. And yes...

    Hereford coming yearling bulls

Ha! 2 or 3 of the 4 may wind up that way and I'll give one or two a chance I think.

    Hereford coming yearling bulls

Best pics I could get without getting in the pen and I didn't have my muck shoes on. They will be coming up to 1 year old this spring, weighed 640 or 660 can't remember which. To me they are disagreeable at this stage in their life, we'll see what they look like when they are about 13-15 months.

    Hereford coming yearling bulls

Bought some horned hereford bull calves at the auction and we are considering raising them as potential breeding bulls. Any thoughts, I kind of like the one with the pigment around his eye although he is likely a cross and not 100% horned hereford. They came from local longtime hereford cow-calf...

    Kochia Prostrata

No, but I keep trying to find someone to try it out on what is basically junk land around here. I think it could be tremendous winter forage in the west.

Bigger Not Always Better When It Comes to Bull

I don't think you can go wrong with buying a bull from PCC or OCC or someone similar to their programs. However, I think you'd actually realize more benefit from higher weaning weight/larger frame bulls if you are running on irrigated MIG pasture. I am looking at PCC/OCC or similar bulls...

    Bred cow prices

The question is really what are the cows worth to you, not to someone else. Are the cows a good buy today at this price, not at some unknown in the future. To me that seems like a fair price using my costs and my market.

Which is more profitable and lower risk?

Which is more profitable and lower risk? The flexibility to do both (cow calf and stocker), either one or none at any given time. Sell a $1200 Cow today, retain her heifer calf (or buy 2 stocker calves), if the heifer calf someday becomes an overvalued young Cow then repeat or sell a yearling...

    Bred Cow Price Trend?

Bred Cow prices=slaughter value (relatively high), feed (in many cow-calf areas quite plentiful), calf prices(highest ever in most places), lack of anything else to do with one's money (and ranchers and particularly farmers are reporting record incomes in many areas). When a rancher is selling...

    Alternative freezer beef cattle

I just wanted to bring up the topic of feeding out an animal other than a young feeder steer or heifer. I've noticed many on here butchering a steer at 1000-1100 lbs and at 15 months or something similar even though the mature frame size of that animal might not be until 1300 lbs and 18 or 24...

    Bred Cow Price Trend?

I'd much rather own a Cow that will replace these high priced calves than trying to buy calves. I couldn't understand all these folks selling all their cows and going to yearlings. I'll keep as many Cows as I can carry over but I can't carry over all the inventory I accumulated from late...

    Bred Cow Price Trend?

Here in Colorado prices jumped at least $100 head in the last two weeks and I am looking to sell up to 300 head of young Angus, Angus plus and few Brangus Cows now. I usually try and buy a lot of old Cows but competition for that got a bit carried away at the last sale and I am probably shut...

    Sold Calves, Pregchecked cows......

    It's nearly 1:1 currently.

    Shrink

At a couple sales in my area your cattle will gain weight from your place, they are so good at feed and water, that probably hurts the sale because buyers don't want a full animal but the extra pounds impress sellers.

    Think it would work?

The numbers I used were very close to my own numbers from this year, including all costs. The prices I always use are the prices today since I am buying a Cow today and not at some imaginary point in the future. Generally if you buy a Cow that has a built in profit the day you buy her...
