I have a Jersey cow that I bottled raised. She has had 3 heifer calves (her most recent born about 10 days ago - a pure Jersey heifer). I really wanted a bull for my freezer, but she hasn't cooperated. I decided to try her as a nurse cow and I just purchased a Brangus heifer (twin to a bull...
I've just purchased a small homestead with 6 acres of pasture. I have one cow (she's a Jersey -- been bred back to a beef bull -- due in March) and her 1 year old Jersey heifer. The previous owner made ONE mention of having dealt with nightshade on the property in the past...he's run cattle...
Thank you for your help, but I am not finding it. I find one with that title but under another board title...it's not the one I remembered seeing. I've been back about 10 pages...Help, please. I am new to cattle. I thought I saw someone posted what they do - and at what age. I have ONE...
I think that someone posted a recommended vaccination schedule here...of course, I didn't print it then...and now I can't find it. Does anyone remember who posted it? Or where I could find it?
Flies are terrible on my Jersey and her calf. I'm trying to keep the manure in the pasture raked and soiled hay in the barn spread thin and outside to dry. What works?
Thank you all for your responses. I'm green...what does PEM stand for? And BVD? The vet did mention that he saw this in cats (someone's comment reminded me of this). No improvement seen today. Looks like he will have to be put down.
Calf born late last night. Will not stand up. Took a bottle of colostrum this morning (willingly). He has tremors constantly. Vet came out - diagnosis "bovine cerabellar disease". No treatment. 50/50 chance he'll make it. Any experience with this? Ideas? Treatments??? Beef calf (mixed...
Here's the background: Juliette is my only cow - a purebred Jersey that I bottle raised. She is 2 years old. She went to pasture with a Jersey bull this summer. Afterwards, I took her to the vet to be checked - she was short-bred. She's due at the end of March 2014. I try to get my hands...
I was told this lump would happen...but since it was my first time giving an injection, we thought this was the best way...especially since I don't have a chute or way to contain 'Juliette'. I just gave her a bucket of feed and got on with it! I think I can manage multiple injection sites...
Well, according to the weight tape around her "armpit" girth, she's 600+ lbs. According to the Noromycin package label, 600# gets 18 ml.
Thanks for your comments. I'll just keep a watch on her.
