    Bull Decisions

We are in the same predicament. Our Red Angus bull came up lame ( twisted his knee on rough ground from that past wet springs) does not seem to be getting any better. So no brainer he must go. :cry2: We do have another bull. This summer we will be breeding 40 - 45 cows. Not sure if we can use...

    Feeding a Newborn Calf

we had a calf last year that couldn't latch on. Poor thing had a very short tongue and couldn't get teat in mouth after four days of helping she figured out a way to get the teat in her mouth and drink. Mom has very nice teats though. Looked pretty funny the way she drank, but it worked. After...

    colostrum or lack of it...observations

I have a calf with a similar case - cow had healthy calf, calf was sucking, getting around just fine seemed like a nice big healthy calf. Day three calf down and out - put cow in chute to see what was up no milk!!! Teats were apparently sealed over - so calf did not get colostrum. Started to...

    Grafted calf

The twins were actually both just as big as any calf that we have born here. The new momma really likes the new baby won't let me too close! I guess I expected that the calf would drink enough from one quarter to be noticable, but she was quite engorged and if the calf is having small feedings I...

    Grafted calf

I lost a calf in cold weather Sunday night - woke up to a dead calf off one of our best cows of course. Couldn't find a replacement calf nearby. Next night another cow had twins - took one of the twins to the mama that lost her calf and put in a pen together on Tuesday at noon. She took the calf...

    cow with bloody discharge?

Vet said not to worry so much! The calf that was scouring has now been sent out to the bigger pasture, he has picked up and is to be pooping in solid form! Hopefully the warmer temps that the weather man promised are true. Just hoping that now the calf with pneumonia can pull through.

    Another Use For Vaseline

That's the most useful tip I've heard of yet!!!!

    Another Use For Vaseline

Used cooking oil also works for removing tar etc. from hands. You can rub someon wooden handles of forks, shovels, rakes and it keeps them from drying out. Also rub some on the inside of metal feeders, water troughs, pails, etc. to keep them from rusting when not in use.

    young calf scouring?

Gave the calf meds as suggested by vet. I did have to give electrolytes one day. He never quit sucking. He is doing much better now and he is running around with his tail in the air. I will put him out of the shed now and keep an eye on him. It has been cold and damp here so I hope he does okay...

    cow with bloody discharge?

I wasn't sure since I haven't seen the other cows do this, or noticed it before. It isn't bright red so I guess she must still be cleaning. Just a little paniced. We have had some awful wet and windy weather - have one calf scoured and now one with pneumonia. I guess I am over thinking things...

    cow with bloody discharge?

I have a cow that calved a week ago. It was an easy birth and a nice sized bull calf (not big). But she has had a bloody discharge for a week . What do you think it could be?

    young calf scouring?

The vet returned my call - said it sounds like scours but it may be caused by stress or change in diet or lots of milk - suggested to keep an eye on him and hit him with meds if he starts to look like he is going downhill. He figures it might clear up if he is nursing well. We have a nasty...

    young calf scouring?

I have a bull calf that was born Wed. am. All went well with the birth. Calf nursed right away. Mom has lots of milk. This morning he has light yellow very runny stool. He was given a shot of Selenium and a shot of A & D. All of our cows are Scourguarded and have been for a few years. I did give...
