A few brahman heifers and my nelore bull

This string of 102-108 degree days makes me really appreciate my brammers and brammer influenced cows. They don't seem to concerned about the heat but my angus bull is barely holding on...

    BSE results not good

Thanks for the replies. He's not a victor domino bull. I plan on keeping him until mid-october, re-test, and turn him out or take to the sale barn.

    BSE results not good

Took my 4 year old angus bull to the vet today for BSE and Trich test...vet said not a lot of sperm and what he found was mostly all DOA. He's thinking all the days with temps over 100 is probably the cause. I don't plan to turn him out until cooler weather(Oct) so maybe I'll recheck in late...

    Heifer production

Sorry for making the milk measurement more complicated than needed. We'll stick with liters going forward. Hope to get some pics soon of the heifers. HD: God has blessed our ministry in many ways. This dairy could help a lot of ugandans if we are successful.

    Heifer production

I'm involved with an African discipleship ministry that works with orphans and college aged kids. I'm headed back over in September to help them get this dairy up and running. We've got 10 wonderful college kids with extremely difficult backgrounds who are currently in the program. Our goal...

    Heifer production

After much research we determined that 5/8 holstein and 3/8 local zebu seems to work the best in sub-sahara africa. However, some local dairies run 100% holstein effectively. No local adapted breeds can produce enough milk to be profitable.

    Heifer production

Thanks for the replies and research. There is a lot of helpful information in those docs. We are focused on the forage and supplement analysis to see what we can do there. We had calculated that at 5-6 gallons per day(19-23 liters/day) we can put 1 student through school per 3 milkers...

    Red Brahman Heifer

I like the way she looks. I have a dozen registered red brammers and they are my favorite. Right off the bat I like her disposition.

    Heifer production

I'm a long time beef cow/calf producer here in Texas but recently had a venture into the dairy business. Thru an organization we purchased 10 holstein heifers in Uganda, Africa where they are being milked. We were taking some risk here because we had no EPDs on the lineage of these heifers but...

    Rose Clover

Yea, I'm gonna try a little experiment with a 20 acre plot. Rose, ball, and little burr medic all mixed together and broadcast on a johnsongrass field. All three are good reseeders so we'll see which one takes over the 2nd year. The ball and little burr have worked for me in the past but this...

    A NO--Go Bull

I turn my hereford bull out on brahman cows in June/July when it's hot. Cows are out all day grazing and you can never find the bull anywhere but laying under a tree. 9 months later all the cows are calving so he is smart enough to go to work when it's cooler at night.

What Would You do With This Cow?

That's why I don't carry my .45 with me when I'm working the cows cause I wouldn't have any left!

    Need help identifying a plant

It's burr clover or otherwise burr medic. See the url below. We have lots of it and encourage it because of its nutritional value. However it has a short growing season and can bloat a cow if not managed. http://stephenville.tamu.edu/forages/fo ... medic.html

    A few fire pics

We are probably 40-50 miles east of you near I-75 and it was hazy from the smoke here plus you could smell it as well.
