Don't try to get by cheaply on that first set of cows/heifers. Buy some good stuff that are the right size animals. Small heifers can be very dificult.
Never had any luck spearing bales from the side. Peanut hay roll is fairly loose and wants to fall apart if handled to much, but the cows love it and it is high in protien.
One thing I have done on my hay storage is to mount metal trusses on the top row of the hay stack. I have gone from 3 on the bottom, 2 in the middle and one on the top to 3 bottom, 2 middle and 3 on the top. The top rows have the trusses that catch the hay rolls around the middle of the roll...
I rent a 10 foot great plains no-till every year from a neighbor. I drill in ryegrass some years and oats other years, after my cows graze down the pastures. It works well. It does take a pretty good tractor to pull it.
I've had cows for 11 years. Most years I lose a little. Some years I lose more than a little. Couple of years I hit a lick and made good money. On balance I come close to breaking even. I love messing with the cows. I would not be able to live this lifestyle (own the farm) if I didn't have...
Be sure it is dry. I put some up that we thought was dry and it shrunk some more. Those gaps can really open up and the spaces between the ends of the boards can expand. Also be prepared to have to horse some of the curved boards into place. Not that hard with the tongue and groove but...
Used haylege for the first time this year. My hay man gave me the choice. He cut the hay off my place and stacked it in one long tube along the fence line. Had no problems with the plastic. The cows loved it. I usually had a box blade on the back of the tractor to counter the extra weight...
Use the wooden box trap but guide the armadillo in with wooden wings. 16' boards spread about 12' wide at the top leading to the opening in the box trap. The armadillo hits the wing and is funneled to the opening of the box trap. It works.
