    Missing calf??

Lee VanRoss, you make a good point, however regarding the mothering instinct of the heifer, (and I say this from personal experience) she may have known exactly where the calf was all along and been tending to it when no one was around. I've seen that they tend to keep them hidden when they...

    Missing calf??

We've treated several with fly strike. We give a bath with iodine shampoo to kill the maggots, (may have to really scrub to get them all) and use screw worm spray after. We use plenty of corona ointment to keep the exposed flesh from drying out. There may be some maggots under the hide. It...

    A better way to wrap/unwrap t-post clips

You know, I wonder why I ever post anything anymore. Seems like every time I do someone feels the need to either make fun of it or act like I'm an idiot. My dad is 84 years old. He's very good at making what he needs. I thought what he made was pretty slick. Sorry if you didn't.

    heartworm prevention in dogs

I spoke to my vet about this and he said that he would not use it in any type of herding dog as they can be sensitive to ivermectin. Other breeds, German Shepherds for instance, do quite well with it. As with any drug you do have to be careful about the dosage.

    heartworm prevention in dogs

Yes, the dosages are easy to find. What's ironic is that the dosages for dogs actually end up giving the animal less per pound of the actual drug than the Heartguard made for dogs. Also, if you use Heartguard for a 60 lb dog and buy the 51-100 lb size, you're giving your dog the recommended...

    heartworm prevention in dogs

We need a board for farm dog questions. I'm not sure where to put this but here goes. I read an article written by a vet a long time ago that you can use ivomec injectable as an oral wormer (including heartworm prevention) in dogs. However it is not safe for use on collies or collie crosses...

    A better way to wrap/unwrap t-post clips

My dad took a pair of pliers and ground the end of one handle down to a taper and on the other handle he drilled a hole thru the end of it. He had his pliers and a way to twist 2 different kinds of clips all in one tool.

    Head Gates

I guess I didn't realize anyone used a squeeze chute without a headgate either. How do you catch them in it? We have a Big Valley squeeze with the self catch headgate. It's worked pretty well for us. The squeeze chute has the "silencer" add-ons -- rubber mat in the bottom, rubber padding to...

Anyone else have these birds around?

We have a few show up every year about this time in so. Illinois.

    Head Gates

Maybe I'm not understanding your set-up. What do you have at the end of your squeeze chute? Ours has a head gate. Sometimes we squeeze, sometimes we don't. (Our vet can't get in behind the calf to castrate with it squeezed.)

    freemartinism in other species

Thanks, ya'll. What a wealth of information. I enjoyed the friendly  banter, too. Too bad freemartinism doesn't affect cats. I love 'em but but by the time the people from town drop theirs off for us, a few can soon become too many!

    Cow won't let milk down

That's pretty much what we thought, just looking for confirmaion. We have a heifer that got bred a little early. She's roughly a year and a half, so she's small and a little thin. Had to assist a little with the birth. The bull calf seemed to be doing fine, though. Good sucking instinct, up...

    Cow won't let milk down

Where is the milk vein, exactly. Also, do you think a calf on a cow would drink from a bottle if he wasn't hungry? (I think a bottle calf would drink 'till he popped)
