    calf can't stand

Yes, sometimes they never get better. Last year we found one that couldn't stand. It's mother had it in the central pen in the corral. On her own. It's problem was the back legs. You could stand it up and balance it by holding its tail lightly and it could walk, but the odd thing was, both back...

Heifer found dead on her back

Never seen it myself either but obviously it does happen. If it were lightning, you might find she still had a mouthful of grass. We had a lightning storm last year that killed two cows 1/2 mi apart from each other and they were out in the open. Not a mark on them, but they were standing before...

    Tailspeed

You can't beat the sight of a calf's tail wagging as it drinks milk from a bottle... Almost makes you forget being drug 100ft through mud and crap and being kicked and trampled fighting to get the nipple into its mouth. On second thought, I prefer watching a calf suck on its momma while...

    How Dangerous are they....

I've never heard it put so perfectly. As far as horses. A cousin needed a place to turn her 24 year old quarter mare out to pasture for retirement. We decided she could stay here, but I was worried at what the cows would do. At first they tried to treat her like a new cow.... that is beat up on...

    How Much Hay

Another NE Texan here.... Titus county. With hay prices and the drought, we couldn't spare any of our grass to cut for hay and the price of hay so high we had to buy just barely enough. We should have enough, but I have had to stretch the cows out a bit. At about 7 acres per cow we are surviving...

Finishing weight -- horns vs. no horns

My grandpa loved a nice set of horns on a cow so all of his are fairly large horned (12-16" each horn in length). Like everyone says though the horned ones will keep the polled or dehorned from eating and when you have a large number in a corral it can get messy. As much as I like the looks of...

    Bull behavior

I am by far not an expert but his behavior doesn't surprise me. When we bring in the cattle to the corrals our bull will stand with them on the other side of the fence nuzzling them. When we sold a few yearling bulls the other day they spent the night in the holding pen just before the loading...

    Which Diesel?

I have a 94 Dodge 4x2 2500 Cummins Turbo w/ Auto sitting at 217k miles. I regularly get 18mpg in mixed driving calculated at the gas pump. On tanks where a large amount of the mileage is on the interstate, I get around 24 unloaded. This is roughly at 400ft above sea level.
