Gonna try some of it this year. Stocking rate will remain the same but the density will go up. Talking to one of the guys that has been doing it awhile and he suggested to start it's a good idea to keep density from 75,000 to 100,000 per Ac. Goes up from there depending on what you are trying to...
Was beginning to think that no one on here had heard of it or else I asked in a way that offended others. No I do not grass finish. I wanted to try but I'm limited by lack of acerage and everyone I've talked to around here has already started their calves on grain by the time they are ready to...
Just curious if anyone went to S.D. to the Grass Fed Exchange last weekend? Sounded interesting but did not have time to fit into my schedule. Wanted to see what different people considered the "right" genetics for grass fed & grass finished.
I'm in E.C. In. and have lots of clay. I use a sacrifice area and put down lots of wood chips I get from the tree crews that trim the power line right of ways. If it gets too soupy I put down more chips and sometimes add some lime to counter act the effects of all the manure that gets put down...
I'll do my best to describe what I do. Picture a rectangle 30 ft. long & 10 ft. wide. If you draw this on paper like it was a map with north at the top, on each long side of the rectangle across from each other I have two 10 ft. bow gates. on the east end of each gate I have two 10 ft. panels...
If I had to pull them I wouldn't give anything for them. I have pulled them with just a 3 point and a chain. If you have a helper it's not too time consuming. Then after you pull'em you still have to pick them up and load them and haul them home.
Dad gummit! I been gone waay too long. I thought I was visiting the cattle forum but instead I been reading The Stockman Grass Farmer, Grass Fed To Finish, Quality Pasture; How to create it and profit from it and a plethora of quotes from grant money funded research papers and pep rallies from...
I would discourage going from grain feeding back to grass as there is just too much difference in the energy of the 2 feeds. In order to get a "finish", weight gains need to remain high in order to build intramuscular fat (marbling). Going from grain to grass your weight gains will go backwards...
I prefer the half inch poly tape. I think it's more visible but it is more subject to the wind. Where deer are a problem I have found that 17 gauge aluminium high tensile seems to give good visibility at night and it is real easy to mend if it does get broken. I use cheap reels. I get extension...
