    Question about post mortem exams?

When we had a cow die the vet came out the next morning. I think that was in the fall though, so the weather was cooler than it is now. We've also had two calves posted. The first one went to the vet as soon as my husband came home from work (about 4:00). The second one we actually took in on...

    Mud and snow UGH!

I've had it with this crazy weather too. Two days ago I was ready to pack up and head south. Snow, 40 mph winds and ice/snow pellets hitting me in the eyes while trying to check the cows.  This is on top of below zero wind chills last week and a calf in the house on Tuesday...

What a difference 10 days make

No need to argue.  They are all heifers. Although I do admit that we put pink tags in the bulls too. What can I say? I like pink.

What a difference 10 days make

Wewild - are you talking about the red one standing behind the others? If you are she's a heifer. Her neck looks like it has a hump because someone's butt is behind her. Although, even without the hump she is a beefy looking heifer. She was born May 4th and her 205 day weight was 705 lbs...

What a difference 10 days make

I was out taking pics of the heifers on 2/20/07. Notice the lack of snow on the ground. Today there seems to be a bit of a change. :o She's not the only one wondering why we live here.

    Let it snow

I don't think we'll be using the tub, alley and squeeze chute anytime soon.

    Almost Dead Calf

(cowboyup216)I would have put it down from the outset as i have a full time job and dont have the time to be babysitting a sick calf. Everyone has 24 hours in their day. I guess I wasn't aware that some people had more or less. (cowboyup216)I just dont have sick cattle. I have a...

Heifer found dead on her back

We've had it happen twice. One lived, one didn't. The one that lived I found while doing a calf check in the middle of the night. She was gasping for air and had all four legs sticking straight out. (The next morning I looked and the slight dip she was in was barely noticeable.) Anyway, I...

    Charolais breeders question

Wow! 9.9 Eek! Is there some website that has breed comparisons for EPD's? I never knew it varied that much. Thanks for all the replies. We've talked with three breeders already and are looking at the first set of bulls tomorrow. vs_ cattle - We do AI. We just aren't going to AI all of them.

    Charolais breeders question

We need a good, low BW Charolais bull. The last bull was out of Oahe Wind. Are there lines we should steer clear of? The reason I'm asking is because these are my FIL's cattle. He passed away suddenly & unexpectedly a few months ago. We raise Limousin and live close to my in-law's place...

Interesting article about heat stress and pregnancy

Good article. Was just talking to the vet about this very thing since we had an abnormally hot summer (plus the drought) here in Wisconsin. He does a lot of dairy herds and he said conception was down. Not looking forward to him preg. checking in November. :(

    Limosine

Nicely said. People are always telling me that they "heard" Limousin were nuts. Well, in the past, we had some crazy Herefords and there were the Angus cows that wouldn't stay in the fence but I don't assume that all Herefords are crazy and all Angus are hard on fences. Our Limousin...

Is there any reason to keep those metal ear tags?

We always request that the vet not put the metal ear tags in when he Bangs vaccinates our heifers. He tatoos them in their right ear and we have our tatoo in their left ear. With most of the heifers we've purchased we've found that the site around the tag gets all mattered and infected and we...

Slick Shear a Good Move for County Show?

Bez? was more eloquent, but here goes. I'm sitting here rolling my eyes with the comments regarding hair = hard work. There are kids that work with their steers by bathing, feeding, leading, brushing, etc. them. They may or many not worry a whole lot about long hair. You're trying to tell me...

    limousin x angus heifers

It is a good cross if you want more muscle on the calves. We raise purebred and fullblood Limousin and don't have a problem with their disposition. It's one of the traits breeders should cull for, along with fertility, conformation, feet, etc. People that have crazy cattle need to learn how...
