    HPCA Veracious

I purchased a heifer that was bred to him. Came unassisted, grew out well, a little light in the hindquarters. His carcass EPDs passed down to that bull calf. Person who bought him does grass fed freezer beefs, wanted him precisely for the carcass traits. Also quite docile. I had two heifers...

    Breeding bull with broken penis

Breeding Soundness Exam Vet will check semen quality, scrotal circumference, make certain the bull can walk, check the prostate. Basically, a determination that there is no physical reason why a bull should not be able to successfully breed cows. Can’t measure libido, though.

PRICE FIXING IN THE BEEF INDUSTRY

No, of course not! My day job is as a banker; one of our board members owned a gas / oil distributor ship. He would come to meetings and announce, “better fill up on your way home, gas price is going up tomorrow.“ He never missed!

Advice for AI on some heifers

Jeanne Thanks for the reply. Your observation and comments make plenty of sense. I have long thought the induced heat logically was not as fertile as a natural heat. I just have not found any research results that confirmed (or not) that theory.

Advice for AI on some heifers

Is your comment on CIDRs and cows based on your A.I. experience (extensive) or university research? This is a question I have asked of our extension service Agent. He tells me research indicates no difference in conception rates on natural versus synced heats. I always use CIDRs, just because of...

    Pendleton Angus

Not familiar with that particular bull, but a bull named Pendleton is registered to Blue Dog Farm, Heavener Oklahoma. That farm is also shown as the breeder of that bull. Anyone can search a registered angus via the American Angus Association website; search by the full name, or partial name, or...

    Bull in pain

I suppose I’ve got the best arrangement ... vet lives 1/2 mile down the road, the clinic is less than 2 miles away. Definitely spoiled. FYI, last time I got nana one from them, pretty sure it was a pour on ...

    Calf weak and shaking

I don’t think you will have to prove those exact dollars we’re used in that manner. After all, money is fungible. You’ll only need to show you spent the equivalent of 60% of the funds on payroll. I do know one person who got a PPP loan that placed the funds in a separate checking account, and is...

    Cares Act 1 percent loan

You need to be careful how you spend it, if you intend to ask for it to be forgiven. My understanding is that you can use 40% of the funds for regular operating expenses, but the rest has to be used for payroll. You can ”pay” yourself. You’ll have to provide documentation on how the funds were...

    Land value

If you are unfamiliar with the market in Clark Co., your best bet is to spend some money ($1500-$2500), hire an appraiser who has general certification to perform appraisals in Ky. The appraiser will develop a fair market value of your property (willing seller, willing buyer, etc.). Typically...

    Deer Valley Unique

Joe is a great resource when it comes to the Select Sires bull battery. He has a great eye for quality cattle.

    Deer Valley Unique

Like cdcollett, I contacted Joe Myers who does some bull selection/procurement for Select. He says calves are”deep bodied and wide based“. Also told me that despite the epsd, he did not recommend for use on heifers; “ would caution you that he is not a consistent calving ease bull. Once in a...

    Lucalyse to abort and rebreed

If you really want to be sure, give 20cc of Dexamethasone when you give the Lut. Bull repeatedly went through a water gap last summer and got into my heifers. Drove me crazy, I could not figure how he managed it. Finally got lucky and saw him. Single strand of electric fence put a stop to his...

    Bloody mucus at estrus

Just an update. Preg checked last week, the heifer settled on the next natural heat. 81% conception with the A.I.!

    Bloody mucus at estrus

I’ve been using AI for the past 20 years, so I’m no rookie. I don’t breed a lot of cows, but got 16 of 20 last fall on observed heat, 70% on a timed AI Protocol for my brother on a group of heifers. To soon to know yet how I did this fall. So far as the protocol is concerned, I used gnrh, then...
