Go over to ranchers forum and check out some of the pictures that Soapweed posted. They will make your stomach churn. The bad thing is it killed more cows than it did calves. Also there were a lot of horses killed. It is very hard to wrap your mind around that much devastation!
 
Thats what i thought-I hear MN got hit hard too-40 inches of snow in spots is kind of really crazy
 
Thousands of cattle dead, just horrible I swear i don't know how I could deal with it. My heart goes out to these ranchers that are having to go out every day trying to locate their cattle. How horrible it must be to find groups and all of them be dead or dyeing. Prayers for these ranch families!

I found this information on the National Cattlemen's Association site, folks we need to get information out to folks on this disaster. It is apparent that the national news and our government don't consider this a major issue.

Donate to South Dakota Rancher's Relief Fund

South Dakota Cattlemen's Association, South Dakota Stockgrowers Association and South Dakota Sheep Growers Association established the South Dakota Rancher Relief Fund Oct. 8, 2013 with the Black Hills Area Community Foundation to provide support and relief assistance to those in the agriculture industry impacted by the blizzard of Oct. 4-7, 2013.

The fund will be administered by the South Dakota Stockgrowers Association, the South Dakota Cattlemen's Association and the South Dakota Sheep Growers Association for the direct benefit of the livestock producers impacted by this devastating blizzard.

The last number I heard was 100,000 head dead but I don't think it accounts for the entire herds that are completely gone. Everyday more and more are being found as the snow banks melt away.
 
From what I've read, that 100,000 is just dead carcasses--doesn't take into account the numbers of calves lost that bred cows were carrying.
 
Another issue is snow drifts are hiding large numbers of dead cattle they may not be able to sort out actual losses until spring. And still not a blip on the national news, goes to show how much the country cares about the american rancher doesn't it. Folks we are in the minority and if we don't start speaking up we are going to become extinct!

Gizmom - I don't watch TV news hardly ever but I listen to FOX and I get news reader feeds on phone and iPad from FOX, USA Today and CNN and I've seen quite a few reports on the blizzard and all of the cattle deaths. I 'Googled' Livestock Lost in Blizzard and got a pretty good listing of local, regional and national news media articles and video available on the internet. New York Times, CNN, NBCNews. I didn't see FOX but am sure they've covered.

My only complaint is the twist being put on the story with the impact the government shutdown has on the Ranchers.

With that said, this just has to suck the soul out operators in that area. I can't imagine the feeling of helplessness they have to be experiencing. My heart goes out to all of them.

To be fair, most of us folks don't know about SD blizzard till the news made to its way into Facebook page and I still agree with Gizmon.
 
I'm not going to win any friends here and those people need all the help they can get and pray that they do.
But I have already seen the political spin starting on "These people need help, so get back to work and pass a farm bill"
Using this tragedy as a way to promote your own agenda is BS
 
Not to throw stones but what about the blizzard that hit the Texas/Oklahoma panhandle last winter.
The death losses were staggering, most wheat pasture cattle are put together groups and all different brands, most don't keep records of every brand or brand 500+ head of stockers.
Most are kept on wheat pasture with electric fence and when the blizzard hit they drifted with the wind, calves were scattered to hell and back and took weeks to find and sort what lived.
Did that make the national news, was there any compassion out of Washington
 
I dont think it was 1.5 million head, i think it was 5% on the herd of the 1.5 million head of cattle in SD .AgWeb.com has a good following on it . there was some burial pits starting to open up for burial around the state earlier this week . I think then they had about 75,000 head accounted for dead. some ranchers had been wipped out .

Point well made I never heard about the blizzard your talking about. What I am seeing is the majority of folks are not informed about natural disasters that's major impact is to livestock, and ranchers. We as breeders or being involved in agricultural have got to become more proactive in education of non ag people as to the impact these losses can have on the average consumer. City dwellers buy from a grocery store with little or no though as to what went into the process of placing that cut of meat into that meat counter. Or what the financial impact could be a year from now.

I'm guessing the term blizzard may actually have different meanings in different parts of the country
