[QUOTE="Jogeephus, post: 384057, member: 4362"] No. My wife is a gift from heaven that I surely don't deserve. She will back whatever decision as if it were her own - which it sometimes is. But we both agree that cattle have to pay their way and we will not pay for the privilege of owning them. By nine this morning, I had already gotten seven phone calls saying the cows were out. They weren't mine but these calls were definitely a harbinger of what's to come if something doesn't change. As it stands, "they did not expect any appreciable rain till July" plus we got 13 full moons this year. If these are correct, this means that though I might be able to make it thru the summer I will not be able to make it thru the winter with no hay and I surely can't mix feed with no hay. So I won't be preconditioning any calves this year. Gonna sort out all the bull calves tomorrow. Called a stocker guy I've dealt with before and he is interested in buying all the bull calves I have. (A good reason for controlled breeding.) Next, I'm gonna cull the mothers of the bulls hard. Been culling about 15% each year so I don't have any real old cows, so I'll be looking for things like, "lost ear tag", "didn't like the way she looked at me", etc. (Oh, and I will get rid of that lebanese cow ya'll gave me such a hard time about.) Next, I'm gonna look at weaning the best heifer calves and sell the rest then cull thru their mommas. Essentially, what I'm hoping to do is reduce my average weight per head hence reducing the total feed requirements while retaining my best genetics and maintaining my total head count in so much as possible. Well this is as far as I've gotten. I feel better even if this plan isn't the best. But at least I have some certainty back in my life. Beefy, you are right on! Send me a hurricane and let me be on the east side of it. *standing stark naked in the top of a 100 foot tall longleaf shaking fist in the air* (And don't think I wouldn't do it if it got me 4 inches of rain!)
