We seem to deal with a handful of these every year. I'd like to know if anyone has some suggestions for preventing them. We lost 4 calves last year. I am considering giving all the newborns a shot of a 7-8 way clostridial. Any thoughts on that?

Are these beef or dairy calves, on the cow or bottle fed? If you want to use a 7 way product in newborns, Alpha 7 is the product you need to use, but don't expect miracles out of it. Clostridium perfringens type A is often implicated in clostridial abomasal ulcers and it is not included in 7/8 way products. If you are not using scour vaccine in the cow herd, I would start with that. Additionally, there are many factors and causes related to these ulcers, especially in bottle fed calves. Management is often an issue that needs attention.
