For whatever reason, in Dec 1955, a phone # in a local newspaper's Sears Roebuck and Co ad to call Santa was typed wrong, and the # in the paper turned out to be the "Red Phone" at Continental Air Defense Command, Colorado Springs, now known as NORAD. Only 2 people in the US had that number--a 4 star General at the pentagon, and the man at CADC that would launch the bombers carrying nuclear weapons if the order came via red phone from the Pentagon and President of the United States.
A child dialed it, the Red Phone rang, the commanding officer hesitantly picked it, fearing the worst, and was surprised to hear a child's voice ask "Is this Santa?"
