There's a reason why I don't like the mineral supplements that you aren't supposed to feed salt with, I find that's the best way to compensate for natural changes that affect intake... In the heat, the cows need more sodium, so they want more salt, so in the summer I mix a little less mineral with my salt, As winter rolls around and they don't need as much salt, I increase the mineral content to keep it somewhat even. Of course there's always going to be the hogs in the herd that eat more than they need, and short of separating them there's not much anyone can do. I think we have a skewed view of how much attention cattle ranchers value good mineral mixes in general, since here on CT we talk about it often... I ripped my mineral supplier a new arsehole a couple weeks ago.. after I bought $500 of mineral and salt, I got home to find the formula had drastically changed for the worse, and most importantly, it was all the minerals I need most that they reduced.. Selenium went from 125mg/kg to 35 mg, Copper went from 2500 to 2000, Protein went from 14% to 0% He said he was going to try to get the old formula back and that I could return what I bought... I know it's going to take them a couple months to get the new formula, so what am I supposed to do in the mean time if I return it?? It wasn't the first time they futzed with the formula, the first time they dropped the Se from 125 to 100 mg, and well, I could live with that.. but if I don't get pizzed at them they're going to sell me plain salt for $40 a bag
