With Angus bulls selling at an all time high this phenomenon should not be happening. In 1986, nearly 97% of federally inspected cattle were Choice or Prime, but in 2005 that declined to 60%. The percentage of beef accepted in CAB has declined to 15.6% in 2005 from nearly 20% in 1999. (The highest accepted rate year) At the same time, Yield Grade 4 cattle have INCREASED from less than 1.5% in 1997 to almost 8% in 2005. Folks, we're just not doing a good job and leaving a lot of money laying on the table. WE'RE GOING BACKWARDS!!!!! If everyone would select breeding stock for carcass traits in addition to the other needed traits we can improve these figures. Get those Marbling and Ribeye Areas up, and get those Backfat numbers down!
