I think if we continually select for weaning weight, yes, the mature animal weight will go up.. If we pay very close attention to that and then push the limits on weaning weight ratio and total weaning weight, to get a small cow that makes a big calf, we're going to set ourselves up for calving problems from young animals that are too small because they didn't grow after weaning. If I can have a herd of cows that aren't recordbreakers, but they ALL make a 650 lb calf in 205 days, don't need inputs other than salt and mineral, the calves look uniform and make you want to cut a steak out of them, and live to do this for 15 years on average or better, then I think I'll be pretty happy... As for that Gelbvieh breeder, His bulls aren't that big, they're a lot like the one in my profile pic.. ~2100 lbs mature weight and produce modest cows.. not small, but no giants either.. Caddy doesn't work with a framy bull, the Shorthorn and Saler in her cause that.. however, she worked very well with the stouter, frame moderating Gelbvieh... Since I wasn't that fond of her last two Limo sired calves, she was bred to her son this year, perhaps that will work better.. Not said I'll keep that calf, heifer or bull.... Her daughter Chroma was also bred Limo the last 2 years, and raise a thunderous steer last year, and a respectable heifer this year (2nd best), but this year's heifer, despite being pretty, is going to be taller than what I'm going for.. So Chroma was bred to her full brother.. I think that could be a replacement bull there if the conformation is good. The rest of the "good" cows my homeraised bull bred are all proven replacement heifer makers, so I really hope I get a couple to see how this works
