Import Japanese Beef
Aug. 22, 2005 — The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) early last week published a proposed rule that would allow boneless beef imports from Japan. If finalized, the rule, published in the Federal Register, would end a four-year ban on Japanese beef that originated September 2001 following the discovery of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in the country, meatingplace.com reported.
According to the National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) U.S. imports of boneless beef from Japan have been relatively minute, averaging 19,000 pounds (lb.) — or about half a semi-trailer load.
The proposal to accept Japanese beef begins the U.S. rule-making process to fulfill an agreement with Japan to resume two-way trade, NCBA stated. However, the organization announced that it would not support finalization of the proposed rule until Japan has completed its process and accepts beef from the U.S.
