Right now we are feeding a 16% dairy feed, prices have gone up to $10.5 a hundred. I'm wondering what do other people feed out there, and if anyone has any ideas on a mix that would be good for dairy cows, but alot cheaper?

I'd appreciate any replies.

Thanks Gail

Unless you are milking commercially - all they get is as follows:

grass, hay, water, mineral and salt.

If this does not carry the animal then it does not deserve to be on the farm.

If you are a dairy guy suggest you contact a feed specialist for a consultative visit for a custom design. A good idea even if you do not have a dairy. Most folks never do this and they miss out on some serious good - and often free - advice.

Cows love consistency. Be careful not to bounce around with a bunch of different feed mixes. If you can find a cheap high energy or protein source and mix it in gradually into your TMR it will work like a champ. If you keep your base ration the same you should be able change things out more frequently.

Straight corn and barley and cottonseed is a whole lot cheaper than those fancy pelleted, premixed feeds - and I dare say it's just as good.
