[QUOTE="Irishred, post: 541473, member: 1368"] With serious consideration of a milk cow, I have been looking into some other aspects of a family farm like chickens, goats and beef cows (also considering a horse or two but not sure on that). For a family of 6 or 7, what would you suggest we look at for numbers of animals and how many acres would we need to mainly self support them? Of course extras that could be sold off to (hopefully) cover expenses every year as well but a mainly self sufficient kinda back to basics type family farm. East TN Smokies used to be a farming area but tourists are trying to take over the mountains. :( Anyway, what would you suggest as for number of acres for crops and animals/kinds? BTW I am really liking some of the red (I assume) Angus our neighbor farm owner has. Something about them is just pretty. This coming from a natural red head LOL. Are they an easy breed to work with?
