So we started calving about 10 days ago, I finally had a chance to get out with my camera and take some photos. The calves are growing pretty good so far. Our BW's are down again this year, we had a pretty warm winter again. The white tags are heifers and the orange are steers.

Couple of 10 day old calves. BA and RA x Shorthorn

Here's a pretty good looking Angus cow, except for her udder. She has about the worst udder in the herd, but she can raise a calf and does it without assistance so we'll keep her around for now. BA x BA/SM

A fairly nice 3 year old we bought as a first calver. Nice udder and a good calf raiser.

One of these things is not like the others..... This cow came from DH's nephew. She's a mix of Hereford, Angus and Charolais. The calf is Shorthorn sired. It is the first grey calf she's ever had.

Isn't it amazing how they can lay down like that, so close to baby without hurting them (usually). Not really necessary today though! HH/BA x BA

These 3 are just making sure I mind my manners!!

3 year old that originally came from Coyote. She is SS x BA and the calf is sired by a Shorthorn bull (also from Coyote)

One of my favorite 3 year olds. The only heifer we got off her sire, and I think I need to look up his bloodlines as I really like her. HH/BA x RA

Great photos Randi, especially of the one tagged Curly, it would make the top of a biscuit tin.
Is the yellow tag in their left ear electronic ID? In Australia all cattle being moved have to carry electronic ID and the database notified of the movement, no big deal really, pretty easy to jump on the site and effect the transfer.

Yes, she is pretty sweet. She was born Feb 26 so she is one of the oldest calves.

Yes, the yellow tag is a RFID tag registered to us for the Canadian Cattle Identification Association(CCIA). We've had to tag all cattle for the last 10-12 years. We don't have to record movement, just tag the cattle. But Age Verification has gotten pretty big and most cattle are age verified now. The website is painful, but they allow you to upload files so it isn't too big of a deal. And the program I use to keep my cattle records produces a file for me so it is easy. The system is designed for total privacy, you can find out the age of cattle, but not where they came from using their tag number. They have got another program using the tags where you can promote your cattle if you want, and receive carcass info back on them.

You said BWs are down. Does the winter you have affect BWs enough that there is a direct correlation?

# 7 is a purebred Shorthorn cow.

Yes, the last 2 winters have been really nice, last year was nicer than this even. And our birthweights have dropped at least 10 lbs. There is info out there that says the BW are related to winter temps. I think it has something to do with blood flow concentration.

I read a study, where they took Hereford cows from one of the Northern states to Florida (I think) and vice versa. The cows in the north had 85ish lb calves, when they were moved to Florida they dropped to 60ish. And the cows from Florida had 60ish lb calves and when they were moved north they increased into the 80s. I wish I could find that study again....

Wow ~ if I had all those babies out in the field, I would have a hard time coming in from the cold. What an exciting time of year for your family I am sure! I never get sick of looking at calves, especially those white and brockle faced babies.

You always take some GREAT pictures and I really enjoy them. So many of your cows and calves remind me of ours! :tiphat:

Speaking for myself, I won't tire of them... I really do like Curly's heifer.. Just happens to be I have her twin

I like all the brown heifers, the all look good in my eyes... Look forward to seeing them as they grow and stretch out a bit.

Our BW's are a little down this year on the heifer calves.. the bull calves.. not so much, 90, 100, 2x110, and 1 at 130. They're all healthy and haven't had to help any of them so I don't mind. We had a mild winter and early spring, the buttercups have just started flowering, but it was really cold the last 2 days and tried to snow today
