Hello All, could some of you offer help and suggestions on feeding my pregnant mare? Hay is getting very scarce and expensive where I am located. My mare is due on about Mothers Day - Mid May sometime. She was not in great athletic shape to begin with and was a little overweight but not bad. She has gained good size so far and eats like a horse - ha ha! I give her good alfalfa hay morning and night but not free choice like a neighbor says I should. I also give her about 1/3 coffee can of mized grain per day in the evenings. She has access to minerals and salt. Now, her hay probably weighs in at about a total of 18 to 22 pounds per day depending on who feeds her. Her starting weight at conception was probably around 900 - she is a foxtrotter at about 14 1/2 hands. This is my first expecting mother horse and I dont want her to get too fat but want a healthy foal. Let me know what I should be doing or watching for. Thanks!
