I am in the process of building a set of pens on our home place. I am putting Rail Road ties 4' deep and 4' apart, the ties are 10-12' long. I plan on using cattle panels nailed on the interior and I would like to use hwy guard rail around the top if i can find used some where in South Texas. If I cant find I will prolly go with pipe around the top, do you think I need to do the same in the middle and bottom too?. I am 45'ing the corners and plan running pipe for water troughs. I have 42 ties in the ground and hopefully will have the perimeter done in the next 2 weekends. I am going 100' wide X 65' deep. In my "big" pen I will have water and I left 2 trees for shade. I would use this pen for long term penning like weaning heifers etc. ( rail road ties last in this area, I have pulled ties up in old fence lines here that have been in the ground for 20 plus yrs and reused them, just saying this ahead of time because I know some have had bad luck in their area with RR ties) Any other ideas or Suggestions? Gates-- I want heavy gates and the heaviest I can find is 1" sch. 40 thats premade locally..is this heavy enough?. I am thinking 1.5" or 2" sch. 40 and hang off of 3" sch, 40 with the brace across the top welded and concrete post in ground. I like the idea of the "cowboy latches" for when on horse back and will have chain too. I am setup for welding so that is not a problem The chute, alley and tub...if i get the pearson setup I am trying to buy, I plan to Make a "foot print" out of 3 or 4" pipe and fill with crushed asphalt, this will be the base I set the equipment on to keep it off the ground and help keep from rusting. Any other ideas or suggestions? I want to go heavy or overkill now, rather than fixing stuff later. Thank you
