This is done in the attempt to highlight a particularly good trait in a particular family. This breeding of closely related cattle is called linebreeding when it works but,alas when it doesn't its called "inbreeding". I would never think of joining son to mother. Grandfather to granddaughter seems to be fine. I don't need to do this though with the number of semen sires available. If you can get away from this inbreeding do it!
