TCFC, much to my wife's chagrin, I'm a book hound. I started collecting cow books some years ago, and some of my favorites are: The Lasater Philosophy of Cattle Raising (go to http://www.isacattleco.com) my favorite. Getting Started with Beef & Dairy Cattle...Thomas Successful Small Scale Farming... Schwenke Beef Cattle... Hansen Five Acres & Independence... Kains (this is a very old book, but interesting read) Storeys Guide to Cattle Raising... Thomas Making Your Small Farm Profitable... Macher How to Raise Cattle... Hasheider A Practical Guide to Successful Farming... edited by Wallace & Moreland (another very old book) I also subscribe to my breed associations magazine and to the TSCRA publication The Cattleman. I also have lots of books written by modern ranchers. Every book that I can find by a modern rancher, I buy. You can learn a lot from other's experiences. But not enough ranchers write books. I've also been to several cattle schools (TAMU and TSCRA's schools) and I keep my notes and the outlines handy. Reading books is a great way to learn, but there's nothing like real cow experience. Good luck to you.
