    cow calf pairs

I do have the experience and the equipment. I guess I was thinking that if I calved them out I would get more money for the pair and then turn around and get more bred heifers. If i could calve them out 3 times a year I would have more cash flow then just selling calves once a year. I know its a...

    cow calf pairs

I have been thinking about buying some bred heifers and calving them out to sell as a pair and was curious on how many have tried it and if it was worth it. Also if I decide to try how old should the calf be before selling as a pair?

    Head per acre clarification

Sounds like you should look into a dry lot operation. Around here some are over stocked but they have alot of silage and rye to feed so you could do it and especially if your only looking to only break even. I would look for more pasture if you really are serious about it, it would be worth your...

    Whats the best way to:

I started with 6 heifer calves that I was gonna background and everyone told me to keep them and have some calves from them and so I did. I didn't have any previous experience and with some help from friends and neighbors I've learned alot! Even being heifers I had a good experience but this...

    vaccinations?

I would take her to the vet or if you had a really good neighbor that could sell you just what doses you need vs buying full bottles.

    Heifer's Actions

All heifers are different. Some are great at the time of calving and others don't know what's going on but eventually they come around to be good mommas from what I've seen anyway.

need to add a squeeze chute...For-most at auction

They are great chutes as long as you watch your head at times. But the only real thing i have seen is the headgate ratchet lever can be a problem. Seen guys get it to tight with a cow putting pressure on it and you have to hit the lever with a hammer. All in all they are good and if the price is...

    Standing in mud

Could you maybe put another ring in? Maybe the group would split and you might not have as much foot traffic around as you do with just 1 hay ring.

    10 heifers

There's a good chance but I wouldn't wanna bet on it for only 30 days.

    checking times

No calving problems due to checking just curious, I heard some folks check every 2-4 hours day and night

    checking times

Just curious on how often everyone else checks heifers/cows that are getting close. And once they calve and the calf is up walking and sucking how often do you check the pair?

    Cows Attacking Round Bales

I like it when they attack cornstalk bales for bedding. Means I don't have to spread it myself haha they can be a lot of help!

I would like to expand my operation and with ground prices as high as they are I was wondering what everyone's single best investment that expanded there operation?

What to buy starting a herd

How much experience do you have? Do you have someone that can help you out when problems arise? If you have good grass and plenty and have some basic equipment already I would buy bred heifers, make sure you have plenty of time to check on them. I started out with 6 heifers with no experience...

    stock tank deicers

Might sound stupid but is everything grounded? Are you the cords in good ccondition? I've used the same one for 3yrs hooked to a 100' 10ga drop cord in a 300gal plastic tank though. GFI is a good thing as well.

    Bulk Bin

I don't know if it helps but I bought a pax bulk bin with a slide at the bottom from a hog farmer and have a feed truck deliver feed. I think I paid $300 for it and it's a 3 ton bin. I have it sitting on 2 railroad ties so a 5 gallon bucket fits under it easily

    bred heifer riding

This is my 2nd year of having bred cows and heifers and I noticed that a bred heifer Ibought was trying to ride a open cow. Should i be concerned that the heifer isn't bred or is that normal?
