    STUPID QUESTION OF THE DAY

It's tiring mostly because the ag tires are rough riding on hard surfaces. If you get a self unloading trailer you would only need the tractor at the loading end. Haul the full trailer home and unload, then repeat. I've hauled hay in with 8 on the trailer with my wife pulling it with the...

What are the benefits of burning pastures

Burning helps control woody junk. Depending on what the grasses are that will dictate what time of year you burn. Around here for WSG we want to burn in early spring when the CSG hav started but the WSG is still dormant.

Bottle calf to out with the herd

Once a bottle calf is conditioned to coming to the bottle when it's called we always turn them out with the herd. That way they learn they are cows but still get the milk they need unless/until one of the cows adopts them. If one days and she doesn;t have a lot of milk keep feeding it the...

    Cattle Land 50 acres

I agree, use corral panels but use T-posts at each junction of the panels. A chain with double ended dog snaps to secure the panels to the posts. That way the cows won;t be able to move them around. It will also give you flexibility to rearrange them to better suite your needs after you've...

    Major birthing trouble

When you need a vet and don;t have any expectations of getting one and you've exhausted your abilities and resources, if the animal is suffering putting her down would be the right option. We've all been in that boat, at least a lot of us have. And there is always regrets because of the "if onlys".

    Put 'er down

Our old butcher used a 22LR on eveything from sheep to bulls. He sold the business and the new guy couldn;t kill them with a 22lr so he went to a 22 Mag. He eventually ended up using s 30-06 on everything and it still took multiple shots. I told him he should cut a skull in half and look to...

    Spring Calving vs. Fall Calving

Friend of mine calves spring and fall. H e says the net is about the same for both seasons. The added income for the fall calvers is offset by the higher costs. He figures it's a wash profit wise between the 2 seasons.

    Put 'er down

Tore up equipment dam near put me in the hospital ran through or climbed over pipe corrals, went through fences, you get the idea...

    Spring Calving vs. Fall Calving

It's only the first couple of weeks they can't regulate their temp. They soon get the ability. We spring calve for the simple reason that the weather even if it is crappy during part of it it will improve later. Fall calving it just keeps getting crappier.

    tagging and tattooing calves

There are a number of Red Angus herds that run multiple hundreds of cows and they seem to find the time to weigh and tag each calf. Yuo can;t manage what you don;t measure.

    tagging and tattooing calves

When we tattoo we only do the heifers that will be kept or sold as breeders and any bulls that are retained. Steers get nothing, registered heifers and bulls get tattooed with individual ID and herd ID. Commercial heifers only get the individual ID tattoo.

    Cull cow to burger ?

It's pretty simple. If the meat is so tough you need a power saw to cut the steaks or if you have a large extended family you are supplying meat to or you are donating the meat to charity. We've done all three. And believe it or not, there are folks that prefer burger to steaks or roasts.

    Pasture grazing question

Depending on the type of grass, rotational grazing will allow you (weather permitting) to stockpile grass for the dormant period and decrease the amount of hay needed.
