tapeworm, Thanks for your reply. I am not just looking for positive replies but I want the negative as well. To answer your questions I have a 10' galvanized stock tank with an automatic float to keep it full. As to the round bales I stated in my first post they are 1000lb bales. the place...

Feeding Only hay - advice needed soon

The ten last year? I fed them nothing other than the haygrazer that was growing. They did not even eat it all. I sold them becasue I wanted to plow up the land and plant winter wheat and at that time there was a bunch of the haygrazer left that I just shredded.

Feeding Only hay - advice needed soon

I am in Texas. Last year I fed 10 steers on this same piece of land for about 45 days just on the sorghum/sudan I had growing. I had zero issues with crowding, messes, mud, disease, etc. I am not wanting to do anything crazy or extreme. I just have the option to get some feed really cheap and am...

Feeding Only hay - advice needed soon

Maybe 30 steers is too many to be in this small of an area? This is the impression I am getting form some of you. Honestly I have no idea. I have been told a round bale will feed 30 steers for 1 day, and I figured 300 bales = 30 steers for 10 months. Should I be looking at feeding fewer cattle...

Feeding Only hay - advice needed soon

Well guys, the auction ended and no one even bid. There were about 10 seprerate lots of the hay and only one which had 180 bales sold and it went for a dollar a bale. I know the guy that runs the place and I may be able to go talk to him and get it even cheaper. I have a 50 horse tractor with...

Feeding Only hay - advice needed soon

I have five acres. About 3 acres of it is fenced off with nothing growing on it. It is farmland and I recently disced it up. They are having an internet auction locally that ends today and they have 1000lb round bales of italian rye grass that are currently at $1.00 each. It is located 20 miles...

plant grass or crops for cows?

Ok well maybe I will keep the tractor, but it just seems like I have too much $$$ tied up in it for no more acreage than I have. When I bought the place it was in bad shape and I used the tractor and a blade to level things, fix roads, etc.

plant grass or crops for cows?

I am new to this so bear with me if this seems like a dumb question. I recently bought 5 acres of land that I put my cows on. I know I am not going to make any sizable money with such a small area but I enjoy it and if I can make a few bucks at it then that is great. The land has been in...

Weed and Brush controll on fence lines

I agree. I use this stuff called Bucanneer Plus. It is basically the same as Roundup Pro in that it is 41% Glyphosate and it contains a surfactant. I can get 2.5 gallon jugs of it at the farm co-op for $43. About 1/3 of the cost of the name brand stuff and it works just as good. The best thing I...

how many cows on my land?

When I was growing up I did quite a bit of work with cattle but I have not been around them much in the last ten years or so because I was living in town. I now have a place in the county with some small acreage and I want to get a few cattle. I just finished fencing my entire property with 4...
