Working cattle - how not to get kicked

A cow in a chute won't kick straight back. They swing their feet to the side as they kick and the sides of the chute prevent that. If they get to bucking they could kick you but you should have time to back up. Having their tail pushed up in the air gives you a lot of control over their...

    Hello!

I never assumed Moonshine was a female. It all seemed like trolling though. P.S. This forum is where English went to die.

    Tagging new calves

I agree with most of what you say. Color among neighbors is the most important. Always check for your neighbor's cattle and hope they'll do the same. I always put my tags in the left ear. If I'm being attacked or the calf rips their ear it'll end up right. I like the consistancy though. This...

    New to cattle. Vaccine ?

If you only have 2 pairs. Could you find a larger producer in your area and work out something to come by when they work cattle? Help them out. I usually throw away more than 2 doses at the end of the day when I work cattle. You could learn a lot and help them out.

    Tagging new calves

Around here you just pick a different color tthan your neighbors. There aren't a whole lot of people with cattle in my community that aren't family so it isn't so hard.

    help deciding on a headgate.

I have a Big Valley that is permanently installed that I use a lot (probably similar to a Tartar or Behlen since it's from Southern States). I hate it. I've replaced the headgate on the squeeze with a cheaper type the folds back. I've had cattle slip through those before though. If they...

    Starting out with Dexters...

Black cows will stay warmer in the winter. It's a give and take. What it boils down to for me is if I can find bulls of a breed that compete against other breeds. I'm not a big proponent of heterosis because it's a "cheap thrill" if you will. You are taking advantage of different...

    Starting out with Dexters...

Your location is probably more important than the climate to make a recommendation. For instance, around here red doesn't sell well at all. White calves do ok if they look like an angus cross. Solid black does the best. Any ear at all gets them docked a lot here. You probably want a polled...

    Starting out with Dexters...

I would recommend sticking to normal sized cattle if you want to make a business of it. You could get one Dexter as a pet if you really want to. I wouldn't fill 60 acres of them without a buyer lined up for the calves.
