I don't know how to deal with this!

We had a heifer that we played with like that (pushing on the knee) when she was little like that... she got my cousin down on the ground in the pasture when she weighed about 900#... I had to get her off him. It's cute and all.... but don't let them do it... I had another thought you could try...

I don't know how to deal with this!

That bottle a couple times was all that it took, especially when she was that young. Sounds like she's still "on the hungry side".... but let her find her own food from the nursing cows... even if she's stealing.... that's better than having a bottle baby. Carry a hotshot with you, and just...

    Buzzards killing mature cows

Certainly doesn't look to me like that cow or calf are "almost dead"... in that last video I posted. Guess I just have to hope that the cold this far north will keep this riff-raff away! Take a look at this... wouldn't be much left of that calf in the last video, if they'd gotten him down with...

Black Vulture Kills Increasing in Ohio Black Vultures Wreaking Havoc In Southern Indiana "We're used to having vultures," Foster said. "The vultures eat the afterbirth, and we're used to them because of that. The black vultures have become aggressive. This morning when I left home, there were...

    Dart Gun

There were a couple of cows with foot issues, and then this past winter we brought in 3 potloads of cows/late calves from Missouri in late November (to Minnesota), so we had some calf issues to deal with... Things went pretty well, better than I had expected honestly... but the December blizzard...

    Dart Gun

I've been using the Cap-Chur long range pistol... and am very pleased with it. There's a learning curve to it, how much power is right for what size dart, and your distance from the animal, etc. It's worked great especially in winter, when I'm unrolling hay. Animals all standing nicely spread...

    paintball marking gun

Yeah... I would expect that "paint balls" would have a hard time meeting BQA requirements. ..... Maybe.............. if you're a good enough shot to place 'em in that neck area every time? Bruising to the muscle is going to be the concern.

    Keeping/Separating fall heifers

If you're concerned about "waste" of the hay, try unrolling, and then just unroll as much of the bale as you need... you can always reload the bale to unroll further... With the high heifer price, I'd probably opt to sell, and replace with 3 for 1's. Hard to go too wrong with them... If dry...

    In like a Lion

Yeah, well... what a difference a few days can make. It was 23 degrees when I got up this morning... and will be again tomorrow morning, so I took advantage of my "poor man's concrete" and got 'em fed without mud. I put out 5 days worth today ahead of 'em, and will probably be out again...

We'll get there soon enough. My poor man's concrete has pretty much left me now!:(

    Breeding in a small herd

If you're going to use a clean-up bull, why not just use the same bull on the first cycle, and avoid all the hassle of synching? That would be my first suggestion. I'm also an advocate for us not messing with the "natural" any more than necessary, and instead, working WITH it... so don't...

My brand was approved in SD

IMO, when starting out, your first priority HAS TO BE keeping them contained on the property... so a decent perimeter fence. Second, you will need to have SOME means of containing them individually when they need work, or for sorting, loading in and out, etc. And you want to be able to do...

My brand was approved in SD

No experience at all, I'd say lease it out, as has been mentioned, perhaps "custom graze" some critters for someone else, and get the experience on their overhead investment, watch how much weight you're able to put on his animals, calculate what the "buy in" cost would have been on them, and...

    Got cows moved home.

I've got mine setup just the opposite. My unroller is on the loader, and then I take another bale along with me on a 3 pt. carrier at the same time. Same basic kind of unroller though... spikes into the ends of the bale, no moving parts to worry about. The KISS program!

    Got cows moved home.

Look like they're in great shape! I assume that the 4th pic is your bale unroller on the 3 pt. hitch? And apparently that's NOT what you've got on the 3 pt. of the tractor in the first pic, since the bale on that tractor would be on it the wrong direction?
