    Portable Corrals

We have several rented big pastures, which is why I am interested. I wonder if you put a bud box in the small side, if your alley would work any better?

    Portable Corrals

Very interested in one of these corrals, does anyone have any new opinions on these. How do these work with a chute hooked in? Pictures would be nice. Thanks

    Am thoroughly confused now

You are absolutely correct Jo, it is impossible, with all your army worms and sick cattle everywhere... I hope everyone has this attitude so my customers have to continue driving hours to pay a premium for our beef raised the way they want it to be... :)

Grazing corn as finish tool update

I can see your point, if I was going to do that in Wisconsin, I think I would want those calves born in Sept for sure.

Grazing corn as finish tool update

Jim: I hear what you are saying about Fall calving, but if you did fall calve, you could graze the milking cows on the corn, and then wean the calves in the spring, graze them all summer and then finish them on the new corn in the fall with their mothers and the new calf crop. This might bleed...

    How to feed only cows?

Why are you feeding grain to cows? If you feel you need to... I would get different cows. :)

1000 lbs for a grass fed (haylage) 11 month old steer!

On good pasture, you should be able to put almost 2 lbs a day on them. So add 300 lbs to the 700 pounder so I would say no, you can't get them finished by fall. You could the thousand pounder. I would offer 90 cents and if he says no, he says no. There are a lot of heavy steers out there. :)

    BULL PRICE

I used our OCC Legend 916S bull in one pasture with 53 cows last summer in a 60 day breeding season. 3 ended up open. He was a 3 year old last summer. We sell our yearling bulls for $1500 and knock off $100 if the buyer takes more than 1. My opinion which is somewhat predjudiced is that...

First calf heifer doesn't know how to be a mom

Mine both thrived, but that may be due more to the fact that I do not calve in the early spring/late winter, in muddy lots and bring baby calves into a disease infested barn.

First calf heifer doesn't know how to be a mom

Sure, once they are bonded, they are bonded. Sounds like you are doing good.

First calf heifer doesn't know how to be a mom

I agree Backhoe, that ideally, and for the best you should get colostrum in them ASAP. I do know of 2 animals that never had colostrum, for at least 36 hours, a bull calf and a heifer, the bull became a steer and lived to be 1300 lbs, and hamburger steaks and roasts before succumbing to the...

First calf heifer doesn't know how to be a mom

Sorry, I didn't see this until now. :) As I was reading through the responses to your problem, I began to suspect that since your apparently lively calf wasn't hungry it had already nursed while you were not looking. Usually they will suck from a bottle, unless they are hypothermic. Then you...

    How do y'all do it?

The piece of equipment I use most is a 731 bobcat. That is what I would get. As to how you do it... take your time, start slow and pay as you go. It is cheaper to rent land than to buy it.

Corn Gluten Feed as Creep Feed

    1. I would never creep feed. My cows need to be able to support their calves adequately and I do not want or need to subsidize them. 2. If you were to creep feed later on in the grazing year, DCGF would work well as pasture protein drops. but... You need to watch the Calcium to Phosphorus...

Thanks for the responses, I have lost quite a few duflex tags this year and I am going to try something different.

cost to carry a cow for a year

350, 700 lb round bales and 1000 square bales, cost me 2 halves of beef and 7 cases of FFA fruit last year out of pocket. My son sold 50 of them to compensate him for running the baler. We still have 150 left at this time and 500 square bales. Most all of the Hay was fed to the small stuff...

    Automatic waterers?

I have a cobett waterer and I think that it is absolutely the best.
