    Replacement females???

It pays to cull hard for fertility and other issues. I plan on tightening the breeding window and letting the crème rise to the top. The times that I gave a cow a second chance because they were my favourite they disappoint 9/10 on the second go around. Dealt with a fellow who had some...

    Replacement females???

Our rates have changed a bit year to year due to pastures and weather and exposure to bulls days. 2021 so so year 60 heifers exposed 60 days 5% open. 2022 good growing year 50 heifers exposed 60 days 0% open 2023 very dry year 60 heifers exposed 50 days 6.7% open. I’ll add that on the last...

    Replacement females???

I don’t need to mention the same arguments for keeping your own replacements again but another good reason is the consistency you get from keeping your own. They come from a herd that is similarly bred and adapted to your management style and there bred to the same type of bulls. The quality and...

    Cold bitz

We equally admire those in the south who can survive the heat of summer. When it’s cold you can always put more layers on. When it’s hot there’s only so many layers to remove. Went down to Nebraska when I was a bit younger with a friend who hauled stock trailers up to Canada. Hung out there with...

    Cold bitz

Yesterday didn’t reallly warm up here. Started -37 and warmed up to -36 c. And… the tire waterer froze. The heater element got a bunch of scale on it and wasnt heating properly. Water valve stuck shut cause the float stuck to some ice. Cows drank water down so I got to work on a frozen waterer...

    Cold bitz

No we aren’t thankfully. We actually pushed back the calving a couple weeks so we won’t start until April 1st ish. Calving in march was getting old. Always seem to have some -20 or colder weather. Amazing how calves can survive it. How about you?

    Cold bitz

Similar weather here. We were spoiled by El Niño so this is a rude awakening to winter weather. Just getting the basic chores done is a success when it gets this cold.

    World's stupidest cows

This is a good story 😂 keep us posted what happens next. Reminded me of a herd not too far from me. A friend of mine who I always thought of as fairly mild mannered fellow was trying to move there cows across the creek. They were pushing the cow herd across a shallow river crossing. It was a...

    Jar the teeth loose

Skid steer with tracks on frozen turds was awful. One cow pie equals 8 jarring bumps ask the tracks rolls over. In such cases I will gladly be the twine cutter

Branding as it’s done here nowadays

That’s the exact brand I was trying to get but it seemed to be taken lol. Although it might province specific. Went with rafter J reverse F

    In like a Lion

Not far off, about an hour and half from there. Spiritwood, Sk.

    In like a Lion

Couple days ago we had -31 C in the morning. There’ll be a few short eared calves. We were colder than the North Pole that day. Checked the weather at the South Pole and was -45C so that made me feel better. Today it’s supposed to get to 0C. Gonna be T shirt weather for us Canadians.

    Might be spring one day.

-29 C here this morning. (-20 F). Keeps the mosquitoes at bay I suppose. But I am a bit jealous of all you with green grass already.

    Expanding the herd

I would rather stay away from calf share if possible just too many variables. I’d suggest a loan instead. If u just come up with a price per animal and figure out term of the loan your both happy with. Here the longest loan u can get on cows is 5 year. And add interest. Done.

    Best cattle at best price?

I would take a good look at the neighbouring ranches in your area. Look at the more successful ones and model yours after them. As there is a good chance theyre type of operation/management style is best suited for the environment. That would be quickest way to success IMO.

    Straw spreading hacks?

Sometimes do the bale shake method. Or just unroll it. If it falls apart too fast then unroll it backwards rotation from how it was baled. Once it’s unrolling, the front tire works quite nicely to keep it going if conditions are right.

Fair rate to pay someone to check cows

I’d suggest a percent of calf crop. That way both are motivated to get the most out of the herd. Not sure with your current arrangement how many of the things he’s supplying. His tractor? Fuel.. feed etc. I assume he’s renting the land to you in a separate deal...

    Choosing who keeps the jewels

If you really like the dam and the sire and he’s the type of calf u want more of then that’s a good start. We’ve been keeping some of our own and we started to send in hair samples to neogen where they use the DNA to get a basic epd profile. Doesn’t have to be purebred to get this info. Has been...

    She did it again..

I’ve heard salers are a young mans breed. You have to be ready to run lol. I have no experience with them. I heard that about limousine too but the few limo influence we’ve had I haven’t had much trouble with. Breeders are really cleaning up those issues
