Can a cow recover from white muscle disease

I had a 2-3 month old heifer calf down similar to yours years ago. I gave it BoSe about every 2-3 days and vitamin E. I also tried to stand it up after about day 2. I milked the cow and tubed the calf at first. Eventually, I noticed the cow would stand close to the calf and soon the calf...

You might find this site of use: http://msucares.com/pubs/publications/p1856.htm It is a drug withdrawal chart for various drugs in cattle.

    Uterine prolapse

Unfortunately, we lost every cow (around 4 or 5 over 20+ years) so far that has had a uterine prolapse. Two we had the vet come out but still lost them. The others we found dead. Obviously, not much luck here with uterine prolapse. Seems to run in streaks here. We would lose 2 or 3 in a...

    Freemartin ?

I have seen other posts where people wonder about same sex twins. The problem comes in cattle when you have opposite sexed twins in that the blood (hormones) mix between twins. I'm no expert by any means, but it doesn't matter if a heifer's hormones mix with another heifer. It doesn't matter...

    banding question

Perhaps I missed something here. Is it the flies you are actually worried about?

    banding

Same here. We band at 1 day old (I can't catch them too well after that). Don't implant either (many of my freezer beef customers don't want implanted beef).

    premature calves

I read on another forum that people in Virginia were having trouble with premature births in the livestock as well. They were blaming it on the wet weather and the hay there as well. From what I read, in the goats the placenta was detaching about 1-2 weeks early and then the goats were...

    colostrum

When a calf (or any baby animal or person) is born it does not have much (if any) of an immune system. Every virus out there can attack and kill the calf. To offset this lack in the immune system, mother nature provides colostrum from the mother which contains antibodies which fight off the...

    vaccines

You are of course referring to vaccines. When you give a vaccine the animal or person develops immunity to the virus. The vaccine can contain the actual virus itself and is called a live virus vaccine. It would be similar to taking the actual virus and injecting it (or exposing it) to the...

    IM injections

Pretty much the same here but I use an 18 gauge needle (1 in) .

    Vaccinating

Should be 1 dose the first time ever that the animal has received the vaccine. Then 2 weeks later a second dose which boosts or amplifies the immune system to produce antibodies effectively. After that, each year you would give it 1 time only to keep the immune system active or primed.

    salt etc.

I use TSC's 6% and sometimes the 12% mineral bags. We seem to need more Ca than a trace salt will give. I also need the Selenium. When I use the 12% (1:1 Ca:P) I add some Selenium 90 which has high Se and Ca levels. Since I switched to the 6% and 12% I have gotten rid of a lot of troubles...
