    Dehorning questions

Barnes dehorner followed by cauterizing with Rhinehart dehorner. Easy peasy.

    Endovac

No. Passive immunity through colostrum has been sufficient.

    Endovac

Still using it. Haven't had any scour or mastitis issues since I started. Pinkeye has been eliminated and foot rot is minimal to non-existant. They cant make claims about pinkeye and footrot but other testimonials have noted the same effect. I do all the cows and heifers once a year, and...

    Mineral feeders

Used those types of feeders for about 15 years or so. Can bolt a FWA tractor tire to bottom of it to give it extra weight and height in muddy conditions. Attach a chain to tire and you can drag around with ATV when changing pastures. You can bust them and my original ones (Behlans) the...

    Same here.

    Knife cutting summer months

You can dehorn and castrate with no care in summer if you keep them lock in a barn afterwards. Otherwise, you're playing with fire.

    Hairy Udder ?

Yep. Nothing worse than a good looking stripper with braided pigtails hanging off her nips.

    Hairy Udder ?

Jan Bonsma and Gerald Fry. There might be animal science studies done out there, you are welcome to go look for them. I know my own experience, it's true. No hairy udders here. I bred them out years ago. Plus they naturally cull themselves with mediocre calves.

    Hairy Udder ?

Indicative of low butterfat content. Essentially a skim milk cow. You want as little hair as possible on the udder. The balder, the better.

    Calf with a bad wheeze

Diphtheria. Nuflor and Metacam every 3 days for 2-3 rounds. If it doesn't get better after couple rounds than you will just have to live with it, unless you want to do a trach operation like Buck suggests. I don't go throwing money like that into stocker calves. One of those things, you have...

    Eye infection, tumo/cancer ?

Cancer. She needs to die ASAP. You might do well if you sell her for kill, with the state of the burger market now.

    Long Range

I have no worm load of any consequence, but the elimination of the summer fly load is what keeps me keen to eventually use LR. I may summon enough courage to pay the price this year - see where cattle prices end up.

Opinions - Heavy Bred (8 months) Cow barely moving after prolapsed last week.. Take her to the sale?

In this country, the big packers will fine the trucker $300 for disposal if they bring a compromised/downer animal to the plant. That is enough of a penalty to keep them off the trucks in the first place. That being said, anything with 'issues' goes on a gooseneck trailer to the local locker...

Opinions - Heavy Bred (8 months) Cow barely moving after prolapsed last week.. Take her to the sale?

If she is within a month of calving and she goes to the yard, good chance she is going to calve there and it to be a wreck. Now there is a possibility of insurance coverage through barn if that happens, but also not and possibility of animal welfare issues. Really need to talk to the barn to...

    Grayish/white scours?

Unless I see blood in it AND the calf isn't sucking, I don't do a thing. BUT I also prevac cows with Endovac and vac calves with Calf Guard. If calf isn't sucking and has no temperature, all I give is Metacam (Banamine for guys in US). If has temperature, gets Nuflor as well.

    Bander recommendation?

Make a bigger cut. Let the nuts hang in the sunshine. Mine all shrivel up within 3 days. Dropping off by 10th day.

    Bander recommendation?

That still does not make sense from a biological standpoint. Regardless a $1 shot and booster of 8/9 way eliminates any concern of tetanus.

    Bander recommendation?

You can't get tetanus at all if you slit the bag. Tetanus spores need an anaerobic environment to germinate - slitting bag allows air in.
