Best disinfectant to use when cutting calves

Blue Coat has been around forever. Its claim to fame is as an anti-fungal...and guaranteed to stain everything it comes into contact with an indelible dark blue.

    Dehorning nubs

Bred the horns off eons ago. If you do them as small calves with a Barnes or similar pull the arteries with forceps and pack the cavity with Pine tar or a similar product & watch them closely to make sure they don't get fly strike.

    Calf attacked by dogs

I'm sorry bulldog04. TT & Ky hills are spot on. I've had a number of fatal dog attacks over the years...the brutality defies comprehension. Carry an accurate rifle.

Selling this bull either for slaughter or to someone

Good looking bulls & pair. What registry are they recorded with what's their respective registration numbers?

    cattle shed fur early

dimka1980...very nice looking Hereford heifers. Know zilch about Siberia save for the fact that environmentally & and politically it's a brutal place for man & beast. I commend your grasp of the English language! Please tell us more about how you acquired your Herefords!

    Parasite or disease?

Interesting article Jl...thanks for posting it. For a variety of reasons it seems doubtful the OP's cow is suffering from Alopecia Areata. Specific additional info would be enlightening e.g. age of cow, frequency of affliction, mgt, location/environmental conditions etc. My thoughts as well.

    Ear tags

Goes without saying tagging success & legibility requires a fundamental knowledge of proper application & marking techniques relevant to the respective products. If you haven't had problems in the past and suddenly encounter issues you need to communicate that to the company. See the 4vcattle...

    Ear tags

Like katpau I've used Z tags for years (on calves for ease of use) and a few years ago experienced application & fading problems in spite of adhering to their protocols. IMO yet another example of a once quality product bastardized & eventually falling short of the mark.

    Winter itch /mange

I'm definitely a fan of Clean Up with one proviso...it's extreme viscosity makes it challenging to apply (even with the product's dedicated applicator) in cold temps...which of course is the likely window of application. Storing it in the house 24 hrs prior to use is warranted.

    Feed or Milk?

You're getting an orphan addiction Murray! 😉. Based on his hair coat I'd pour him for lice ASAP. Those beggars can do a number on cattle and especially stressed wee ones.

    Is this a nutrition issue?

Yet another argument for selecting for correct hook to pin conformation.

    Bottle Calf

    Excellent advice Jan. Thank you!

    Bottle Calf

Make sure you're using a quality milk based (not soy) replacer. Some mild scouring is to be expected. As long as she's perky and not running a temp she should be fine. Probios paste may help & certainly won't hurt her.

    Black Angus coats turning reddish?

Copper deficient here too. Ive used Copasure since it first was available. Cows receive it when worked a couple of months before calving & calves receive it at processing.

What are the biggest health issues you are facing right now?

A comprehensive (cows and subsequent calves) herd health, nutrition, Mgt & good stockmanship mitigates a lot of problems.

Dandy links Murray. Thanks. Don't let Willy snitch your apple. :D

    Storing Meds

TCR glad you found it helpful! I was stunned that the ML vac was frozen hard as a rock in the the cooler. Grrrr. ROTFL...I've lost count of my micro fiber towel stash!

    Storing Meds

All great advice. One of the best investments is a fridge thermometer. I store vaccines that require refrigeration in a plastic box in my house refrigerator with a thermometer next to it. I also use one in my cooler when working cattle. I learned the hard way that its possible to freeze vaccines...
