    A Discussion About EPDs

I think EPD's are like alot of things - they can be a very good tool but are not necessarily to be taken as the gospel. Good common sense has to be in the mix somewhere as does just an eye for the animal and good business practice. Just my 2 cents.

    Line one Herefords...Pros and Cons???

We just bought 3 new 2yr old bulls that are basically MSU line 1 Havre bloodlines - they'll get here in April! looking forward to seeing them again - we bought them last fall. Don't ask me any complicated genetics questions - that's hubby's job! I just lide them based strictly on looks.

    Charolais Attributes

We've run charlois bulls over our herf.x cows for years and have had great success. The bulls are not overly hard to handle. We have several real nice lbw herf bulls we cover the heifers with. I have kept quite a few of the char x herf cows and they have lovely calves that wean really heavy...

    5L Norseman King 2291L

I agree with Sage, I'm not a particular fan of this bull or red angus in general but we have several low BW bulls that we put with 1st & 2nd calf heifers, and I have bulls with bw of 90-95, that I use on older cows - maybe we've just been lucky but only had to pull one calf last year and he was...

Out of curiosity - Hereford cattle

We have both and in our commercial herd we usually have to dehorn about 25% of the calves at branding - no big deal when they are little we just use an iron. I like the heft and shape of the horned bulls and I agree their disposition is unbeatable - they are just big puppies! I don't really...

    Twins

We usually get one or two sets of twins every year - these 2 heifers/cows are the only ones I've kept. It's hard to remember but I can't recall very many sets of twins of different sexes? Seems to me they're usually both bull calves? I usually end up bottle raising one of them but This pair of...

    Twins

I have a set of twin cows that are about 6 yrs old now, have great calves every year - they were pretty tiny at birth but by weaning you'd never know they were twins - I really loved their momma, so decided to keep them both as replacements - 1 of them has had 1 set of twins 2 yrs ago and the...

    Blues/ Blondes/Piedmontese

I'll be glad to post pics as soon as the little buggers arrive - should be early Feb. I'm anxious too. As I mentioned, we've contracted our calves the past 8-9 years to the same buyer and he's excited about this cross too - since he feedlots them we'll get a good idea of the progress compared...

    Blues/ Blondes/Piedmontese

Most of our cows are herf X, bwf and a few simm x, I have quite a few replacement heifers by our good charlois bulls - but this will be the last year we'll be using that bull and the simmx bull, we just bought 5 new herf bulls last year but are looking for a few more for the 2008 breeding season...

    Blues/ Blondes/Piedmontese

Thanks CKC I'm really excited to see what they come out like - my hubby is worried that they'll be an odd color and that will affect sale - I tell him we already cross with a charlois bull so we get a fair share of buff or chocolate calves and it never bothers anybody. But you know what the...

    Blues/ Blondes/Piedmontese

I'm very excited and curious, last spring we ai'd 10 of our good commercial cows with Pied semen - can't wait to see the calves. We are running 370 head of commercial cross bred cows - I've kept back 60 really exceptional heifers this year. Most of the cows are herf x about 1/2 bwf and some...
