    What's a bull worth?

I totally agree that a bull is only worth what people will pay for him. Been to a few sales that the right two people wanted the same bull and ran the price up more than twice what i would have paid for him. Was that bull worth it to me? No, but he was worth it to the person who bought him...

frame score vs paying the bills

Im a commercial producer and all of our bulls have a frame score between 5.8 and 6.3. We have three farms and move the bulls to match the frame score of the cows at each farm. I theres no way i would buy a bull with a frame score over 7. We feed out all of our calves and i have an idea of...

What is your favorite cross for mother cows?

I think that the environment the cattle live in and the purpose for them play a large role in what works best for each individual. We really like the simangus cow crossed with an angus bull. This fits our operation well since we feed all our cattle out and sell them on the grid. We not only...

    Insurance

We have insurance also on our entire farm and it came in very handy a couple years ago. I don't know if the cow was possed or was chased through the fence by something but she went through a 5 strand barb wire fence with another strand of smooth electric wire and was hit by a car. There was an...

    For all the hard core

If I had to choose something we don't have, then I would like nothing better than to look out the window and see a herd of red angus or the red and white simmental's contently grazing in the pastures.

    black angus simmental cross bulls

Let's just say for ease of explaining that you have 100 cows in your herd, and of these 100 cows, 50 of them are predominately a british breed (we'll say angus), and the other half continental (we'll say charolais). If you run a british bull, such as angus, on your cows, then the calves out of...

    black angus simmental cross bulls

One of our bulls is a simangus, and we really like him. Calm disposition, looks like he's on 'roids, has some really good epd's, and so far we have been very pleased with his calves. I wouldn't be hesistant at all to get one. I know we haven't been disappointed. Actually if you have a very...

    So how old are you?

I am 23 and at my day job I work with a bunch of guys that are twice my age and old enough to be my parents, of which I never fail to remind them. They always want to hear of my adventures running around having fun which reminds them of themselves at that age. They all claim they were glad...

    F1 Power Beats any Breed

I really enjoy the F1 cows. We used to have a rainbow colored cow herd with many diffferent breeds, but lately we have focused on getting more simangus cows. We run angus bulls back with them. We have been very pleased with them. F1 cows are supposed to wean 23% more pounds of beef than a...

    Best bull for Simmangus heifers

Most of our cows are simangus. I am really are happy with them. They are bred back to angus bulls. I thought about using pb simm. bulls, but we finish out all of our calves and sell on the grid, so the angus in them should help them finish a little easier and grade a little better. Just a...

    Heterosis

If crossbreeds don't fit into your herd or program, then by all means don't use them. They fit into mine, and it gives me heterosis which is one of the few things nature gives you for free. I would have a difficult time giving that up.

Can anyone on here graze cattle all winter long?

Live in southern Illinois and don't like to feed hay because of the expense. We try to graze year round and last winter there was only about seven to ten days that the cows couldn't graze because of snow/ice so we got by with feeding 70 cows 15 round bales over the winter. We don't expect this...
