    New Bull-EPD Questions

EPDs are a tool. If you want to use them take the time to understand what they are and aren't (I'm familiar with Angus and Wagyu epds but of no help with Sim). EPDs can be useful but they can also be misleading. We use AI for our breeding and we moved several years ago to only using high...

    Wagyu X Calves

I have a jersey cow and a jersey/angus cross cow. I've never crossed Wagyu x Jersey -- but I have bred the x-bred to wagyu (AI). If you have patience and a good feeding program it would probably work fine as private sale beef. They will grow slow. They should marble very well. They will...

Stirring the pot on the LH/corriente topic

There is indeed a difference (beyond price) between Japanese raised wagyu and US 50/50/% wagyu crosses. I've had both. I raise the latter/fill my freezer with the latter.

    Wagyu X Calves

I may have missed it -- but what kind of cows do you have? Wagyu crosses out of good angus cattle can wean off just fine (genetics). But they can also be runts :-). I've used black wagyu (AI) for several years on heifers. Yes they tend to be calving ease -- but that isn't a guarantee either...

What Age Do You Take Steer to Butcher?

We send 15+ to the butcher each year (direct sale beef). Our local lockers are taking 2025 bookings (booked out 18+months). We just booked dates for the calves that are in utero. Genetics plays a huge role in both growth and marbling (we raise PB angus and angus/wagyu crosses). My dad sent...

Stirring the pot on the LH/corriente topic

Angus x Jersey grow fine and marble well. They are good eating (we've slaughtered 1-2 for several years).

Stirring the pot on the LH/corriente topic

https://cabcattle.com/about/faqs/ "I've heard cattle just have to be 51% black-hided to for cattle to make the CAB brand. Is that true? That's a common myth out in cattle country. To be eligible for our brand, cattle must first pass visual appraisal to qualify as "Angus type." What's that mean...

Stirring the pot on the LH/corriente topic

https://www.certifiedangusbeef.com/brand/specs.php OR here: https://www.angus.org/Pub/FAQs -- below 8.What are the requirements for the Certified Angus Beef® (CAB) brand? Live cattle must be Angus-influenced: have a predominately (51%) solid black hide to be eligible for CAB evaluation. They...

    Byergo Cattle ?

Limited experience using Byergo Black Magic. I can't vouch for the feed efficiency as I don't have the grow safe system. Frame size has crept smaller in angus nationaly (imo) so Byergo are likely going to increase frame size but my results haven't been as large as I would have guessed. The...

    Wagyu.....

Poor word choice maybe. In my experience they aren't wild or mean -- more like Dave said -- stupid -- as in "you see that big open gate, go there, not into the corner with the concrete wall."

    Wagyu.....

I can't argue with you Dave. They are flighty. They do look a lot better on the plate than they do in the pasture. :-)

I had one of them there epiphanies this morning.....

Yep what @farmjan said. Up here advising anyone to get into livestock over row crops would be heresy. Just a difference in regions. I can't comment on your cattle advice either as this region's markets for cattle are very different. As I read your post I was like "why would you not keep...

I had one of them there epiphanies this morning.....

In the upper midwest your advice would be looked on with a a raised eyebrow -- there is very little row crop land being converted into pasture. What little pasture does remain is being converted to row crops. I know a lot more operators in the last year that have sold all their cattle. And...

    Black hided vs others

    That is the correct answer.

    Lot 1 GAR Sale

Simme said it well. GAR breeds for the rail. SAV breeds for the scale. If you know your market there is currently money to be made doing both. Like Simme hints, I do think there will be increasing pressure in the beef industry that moves things towards the uniformity of end product seen in...

Purchasing heavy breds vs steers ?

As someone that raises angus, angus x wagyu, pb wagyu, and F2s as you say -- the first thing I would say -- do you have a market? Second, a good F1 (out of a quality angus cow) can easily finish in less than 24 months. An F2 though -- all over the board on their growth and finishing time. F2...

    Things I didn't expect in this thread -- a sub-debate on Oscar Wilde. ;)

Wagyu bloodlines ? Where to buy straws ?

A wiser person would use reds. But I've only used black sires. Partially because that is what has been available via my AI rep. Partially because I've been around black angus my entire life and anything else is blasphemy ;-) The reds though appear to have more muscle, grow more quickly, and...
